“We are the World”

By Johanne Margarette R. Macob

I STILL have some sort of hangover from the Miss Earth International 2012 short stint in the province. Well for one, because it’s the first time that I did interact with people from across the globe and second, maybe because I still am interacting with some of them through social media networks.

Through such interactions, I have learned many things, particularly about the environment. The utilization of LED light, a project being undertaken by Miss Colombia; the solar street lighting of Miss Botswana; the maximization of solar energy usage as imparted by Miss Brazil; and so much more!

And if there’s a quote I will always find very eloquent, it’s the one from Miss Singapore Phoebe Tan, which she emailed to me: “We should all do our part in sustaining Mother Earth as we do not just live in this world, but the world lives within us.” With that statement alone, my awareness and concern for our world has grown further.

Indeed, we do not just need our world but the world also needs us. And if we want it to be a way better place then it’s us, its occupants, who can bring such positive change. Through simple things like turning off all appliances and the like when not in use, or using a glass instead of the flowing faucet when brushing our teeth, properly disposing our garbage, and many more small things, we are already helping save the world BIG time! We need not be among the Who’s Who in the social realm to be able to carry out great things. As long as we get to learn the real value of the world, and we have the determination to act upon that realization, then we all can be an “earth warrior”.

Yes, the content of this article is quite cliché. It’s probably an overrated idea but sadly often overlooked. I just hope that somehow, some people who read this will be inspired as I have been by the Miss Earth advocacy and will be moved to do even the simplest share to make our home the best home possible.

Again, as Phoebe said, “…we do not just live in this world, but the world lives within us.” The world, our world reflects us as we reflect our world. It’s not that hard to take care of our environment. Hey, it’s as easy as taking off our selves! Please, let us do our part…right here, right now.
