Enthralling cultural shows

By Jun Velasco

“We should study our past to move us forward,,” Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr.

LEADERS of the world’s two most powerful nations, the US and China, taking on their roles peacefully in their respective governments is simply awesome.

The rites were peaceful, cordial but suspenseful amidst an anxious planet that is literally and figuratively being torn apart ironically by man himself.

We were impressed by Gov. Mitt Romney quickly conceding defeat despite his most expensive billion-dollar campaign to the reelection of President Barack Obama.

In China, the sight of Xi Jinping, 59, marching on the stage to replace President Hu Jintao is earthshaking for in his hands partly depends how the world behaves today and onwards.

A couple of days back, the Middle East was shaken by attack and counter-attack between Israel forces and the Hamas, raising fears of a prophesied world war that’s now knocking on our doors.

We, puny earthlings, can help avert an impending doom by inspiring our world leaders to take the path of peace because a slight miscalculation could result to an unimaginable nightmare.

That was a sight to see.

Rep. Pol Bataoil told us during the cultural night at the Capitol Plaza Thursday that during the birthday party of unopposed Congresswoman Rachel Arenas, old friends who by dint of partisan politics have become political rivals were seen hugging and shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries.

You should have seen Gov. Spines and Mayor Nani Braganza, Vice Gov. Ferdie Calimlim and his vice gubernatorial opponent Art Lomibao in brotherly embrace!

When Spines and Art embraced each other in the traditional PMA gesture, everybody applauded. A loud toast to brotherhood.

Their display of reconciliation and reconciliation was a great gift for the pretty congresswoman who naturally feels apolitical these days. A naughty wag says “that’s the lull before the storm.”

Huag naman, malapit na ang Christmas!

Please sustain the friendship and goodwill for the sake of the province.

At the Pangasinan cultural night, we saw and heard youthful senatorial bet Bam Aquino. He looked and sounded like his national hero uncle Ninoy Aquino with only their respective advocacies being different.

The late Ninoy’s passion was political reform, while Bam, improving the livelihood of Filipinos.

Ninoy’s advocacy was militant. Bam’s goes straight to the stomach.

Let’s hope Bam’s message reaches the hearts of Filipinos to assure him of a seat in the Senate.

By the way, the cultural presentation was one of the best times of our life in the province while we ogled and enjoyed the beautiful dances and songs and shows by LGUs performing in front of the Capitol.

Watchers couldn’t help ooze with admiration at the dexterity and grace of the dancers, and the mellifluous and powerful voices of the singing performers.

Since we have had too much of western culture and music that often dehumanizes, we should tune in to our folk culture to inspire and keep us in touch with our deepest feelings.

What we saw showed that Philippine folklore is very rich and inspirational that unlocks our love for our own.

Under Governor Spines, the past is being revived through our scholars and historians, artists. Cultural presentations inspire the present generation to love their province. The more we have this kind of activity, the more we’d love our past, a great past.

Inner Wheel Club regional stalwart Precy Velasco Nava reports that her club will hold on November 24 an oratorical contest at the Plato Wraps along the De Venecia Road in Calasiao, Pangasinan.  The event, she says, is designed to inculcate in the young love of country and passion for excellence…..There’s a new bistro in Calasiao, Mug Zhots owned by the Quizon couple, Rey and Rose. Classy and with the yummiest eats in town, it is the best place to visit these days. We saw at its opening Usec Toti Baraan, former Rep. Eric Acuna, Mayor Lito Zaplan, Vice Mayor Roy Macanlalay, members of the Chuson family, and many others.
