A Kabaleyan’s Thoughts…
Education of the Heart
By S. Bill Jimenez
IN our success-oriented society, people often forget the sublime in their pursuit of success and wealth. There is a need, therefore, of going back to where people started–to God and His word.
Education worthy of its name must not put God in the background. God’s word as it is revealed to us in Scripture and is the foundation of true learning. As the prophet said, “I know, O Lord, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps” (Jeremiah 10:23).
This is the education of the heart. As an educational pioneer said,
“If we educate a man’s mind but do not educate his heart we make a dangerous man.”
If knowledge is increased without an accompanying increase in moral and spiritual values, moral decay follows.
Real education starts with young children: “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6).
Likewise, John Milton said, “The end of all education is for the child to gain knowledge of God in Christ, and out of that knowledge to love him, to imitate him, and to grow like him.”
Education of the heart means the moral and spiritual advancement of the nation.
As the wise man exhorts, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).
