THURSDAY might, we had a “workshop” by the Chatanooga pool at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen with Philippine Sports Commissioner Jolly Gomez and Governor Amado Espino Jr. as “resource speakers.”
The subject was sports, athletics, good governance, strong Republic, winning, and the ongoing Batang Pinoy Northern Luzon games.
“Pangasinan,” says, our partner Clyde Mariano when we were in the Manila Bulletin, “is leading in the Northern Luzon kiddie competitions.”
The guv’nor, who couldn’t conceal his fondness for sports, was discoursing on starting ‘em young, while they are pure as angels, if we are to sire great sportsman the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Ana Julaton, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Jess Garcia and the like.
More than a thousand took part in the games, and it looks like Pangasinan is going to clinch the championship.
In the “workshop,” Commissioner Gomez thumbed down Recah Trinidad’s inter-barangay boxing calling it “ super-expensive and too much for too little.”
He zeroed in instead on the province’s well-known ace which is cycling we partly credit to the late Tour of Luzon founder Atty. Geruncio La Cuesta.
We told Clyde: before he was killed, Gerry Lacuesta was in our home, and we even gifted him with a James Bond attaché case, bless his soul. The following day of that fateful day in l983 cumpadre Al Mendoza, who was then with Panorama, came to Dagupan to write about Lacuesta’s slaying.
The tragedy that fell Gerry was connected with his foray in the management of fish-rich Mangabol fisheries. That though is another story we may go back to someday.
What the “workshop” gravitated to points to Espino’s zealous passion – or passionate zeal – in developing the young to great heights of athletic leadership, a sinequa non, he said, to developing strong republic.

Gina, you know, has built her own machinery that can equal hubby’s.
But how about vice mayoral bet Alex Siapno being replaced by Brian Lim? It isn’t legally allowed because they don’t have the same family name, say Comelec authorities.
He could be replaced only by former Mayor Pepe Siapno, a Joe de Venecia loyalist, if he so desires, risking a friendship built through the years.

As the politics frenzy reaches fever pitch, we wonder how we could ignore Prof. Jimmy Licauco’s caution aired before Pangasinan Rotarians about 4 months ago.
He said the earth as well as all the planets in the Solar System are moving at break-neck speed towards a point in the galaxy where they’d form a straight line. The target date is December 21, 2012. The gifted Mayans predicted this 26,000 years ago. We can’t say for sure how this gifted race in South America acquired their gift of prophecy. They were unerring, and that could be troubling these days.
The movement towards that straight line has been causing daily earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, typhoons and other “natural” calamities. We have a neat word for it – climate change!
Thousands have already died. We had our share of these fatalities during the Pepeng flood.
While we are writing this, earthquakes and floods are happening in other parts of the globe.
This is so, says Prof. Licauco, because the positions of the planets are no longer in their usual places. That’s why even the perennially hot Sahara desert was recently flooded. And the ice caps on the arctic and Antarctic mountains have liquefied causing floods in China and other parts of the globe.
Isn’t it time to look inward and find out if we have missed out with our Lord Almighty?
Sorry, if we sound like a killjoy, but to us, looking inward is the best way to sober up while the rest of our brothers and sisters are feasting on the freewheeling political feast.
Time to read the Bible before we get submerged in the political muck.
