Simple Living?

THE ECONOMY is sagging!  Prices of commodities are soaring.  What shall we do?

Live simply?  Life is meant to be simple.  Our needs are simple, but greed, pride, and ego (“edging God out?”) make life complex.  Even in this 21^st century, with many advances in science and technology, life seems to be getting harder.

What shall we do?  Let’s learn from great minds.  Albert Einstein once observed:

“Possessions, outward success, publicity, luxury–to me these have always been contemptible.  I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best both for the body and the mind.”  Socrates also observed: “I have lived long enough to learn how much there is I can really do without…  He is nearest to God who needs the fewest things.”

That seems to conform to the philosophy of Jesus.  He lived a simple life.  Born in a manger, he grew up in a rural community and worked as a carpenter.  When he became an itinerant preacher, he made this remark: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20).

We must then learn to live a simple and responsible life.  We should work even more and spend less than we earn.  Let’s avoid luxury and wasteful spending.  Live simply!
