Basura, basura, basura, basura, basura, basura…

By Gonzalo Duque

WE could go ad infinitum.

Why are we going nuts over our garbage problem in the city? Why not?

Are you not?

It should in fact be the first, the most basic and the most elementary issue that should face us Dagupenos all.

Mangan ka, agmo la nonotey pandepositan may taena? Antotan kayo?

We were about to put “Basura” or Garbage City in our column head. But the one we used “Basura”….. ad infinitum should suffice to show our massive dismay over the city’s garbage problem.

Siopa may angibagan “The Second Most Livable City in the World” so Dagupan?

Somebody, an alleged friend, asked us, “akin et pansasakitan may ulo itay garbage ah?”

You know, no less than Mayor Benjie assured this columnist in his first term ever yet that in less than a year he would have solved the city’s garbage problem. E, anto ey?

Garbage is a most basic issue.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness; hence, our high concern on our waste issue.

We pay tribute to the man who saved the Impeachment Trial from going to tatters.

Senate President Johnny Enrile’s masterful handling of the Trial of the Century led to its success.

Who is Johnny Enrile?

You know, we met by chance while the trial was going on. He told us he’d preside with utmost integrity and competence. “Ayaw kong dungisan ang pangalan ng tatay ko. Yong tama lang, “he said matter of factly.

Of course, you and this columnist have always known Senator Enrile.

Since Martial Law days, Enrile was associated with the late Dictator Marcos. He was hated. He, too, was customs czar, then Justice Secretary.

But, he was the man who dismantled the Martial Law apparatus.

Later under our free government – post Marcos era, he ran and won as Senator. Then he ran for congress and won.

He was involved in coups – but later, as Defense Secretary, he rejected the Marcos rule, and with FVR, led the restoration of democracy under President Cory.

He has been many things to many of us. A survivor.

And NOW as Senate President, he played an immense role in the Impeachment of then Chief Justice Renato Corona. It was his shining glory.

He is today the greatest Filipino in the eyes of many. We doff our hat to him.

His son Jack is running for the Senate. He must have the attributes of the orig. Let’s vote for him.

In the controversial Pacquio – Bradley fight, the clear winner is Bob Arum.

To us, the belt is meaningless. Manny is the clear winner.

Even Pacquio’s enemies can’t believe it — but are forced to concede his win.

It’s a pyrrhic victory for Bradley. Everybody is questioning it.

But Manny in defeat has become a towering giant.

Congratulations to the heirs of Private Jose Nisperos of San Fernando, La Union, great grandfather of our friend, Gerry Nisperos, very talented husband of the former Marvie Sanchez of Bani, Pangasinan.

Nisperos heroism during the First World War was recently recognized by the US Government when it presented the Congressional Medal of Honor as its first ever Filipino awardee.
