Understanding media

By Jun Velasco

Only the just man enjoys peace of mind,” Epictetus

BECAUSE of television, we more than 90 million Filipinos who had anxiously waited for the highest magistrate to stand up (as he promised to do) and speak his piece  before a Grand Court of Law to prove his innocence, integrity and fitness in office got  the finest twist of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

The walkout.

Did Chief Justice Corona think he was addressing his own Supreme Court?

Wait, while we wrote this, the papers said he’d return to the lions’ den and pick up the pieces. Will he?

Meanwhile, so much hubris, hate, animosities have descended and engulfed

the nation. All because of the two big guns of the nation’s officialdom cutting each other’s throats.

Is this really why we are in this hapless part of our beleaguered planet?

Meanwhile, most citizens and denizens who are glued to their TV sets are suddenly scratching their heads on where and how to get their next meal, how to settle the kids’ tuition fees, not to pay a loan that’s due today, etc.

Life must go on.

Don’t misunderstand the media for picking on the misdemeanors of public officials, who are paid salaries from the sweat and blood of the people.

Taxpayers are duty-bound to track where their money is going.

Take that Mangaldan payroll scam where town officials dipped their dirty fingers in the cookie jar and ran off with some P7.9 million cash.

Mayor Hermie Romero should be commended for exposing the heist to the media, and not concealing it. Other town executives would have done a cover-up.

This media-government “cold war” is designed to preempt public funds embezzlement by cunning and untrustworthy officials. There would be no war if the man or woman on duty can be trusted.

Drawing from the Corona caper, what certain city officials under heavy artillery from the MC Adore hellfire should do is bravely face the music – no need of power point – to show their hands unstained and unsoiled by dirty money. It’s as simple as telling the suspicious minds to their faces that they are indulging in loose and irresponsible talk.

To court silence in the midst of bedlam is to invite disaster.

One visible reason why Joey de Venecia would be a shoo-in in his next shot at the Senate is his increasing visibility all over the land.

But first, with the help of his kith and kin in Dagupan, San Carlos and other Pangasinan towns, he is tightening his grip, so to speak, on the huge De Venecia Clan to backstop his senate bid. The clan met last Sat. with Claudette V. Dalusong and Teody Macatbag coordinating.

This time, the main issue he has chosen to champion is reduced fees for text messages which is meant for 97 million cellphone users.

With this happy mix, we predict Joey’s easy sojourn to No. 1 spot in the senate race.
