Decency

By Gonzalo Duque

HAPPY Valentine to you!

One day last week, we saw a lady faith healer per suggestion of our friend, Prof. Jaime Licauco, for the removal of certain ailments in our body.

After the session, we were instructed to take precautions on what not to eat and what activities to avoid so that the healing would be effective.

One requirement: hindi pede ang maligo for 6 days. Kailangan naspo lang. Ugh!

Here’s another requirement we found impossible to implement under the season: No sex for 36 days.

When we told Macky Samson about it, he almost fell from his seat.

His seatmate (was it Al Fernandez?} said, “mabuti pang di ka na magamot, pare.” Maybe Al was right.

During the early years of the New Society, we were a witness to the signing of a vital document signed by four big education leaders of Pangasinan, President Luis Samson of the then Luzon Colleges; President George Rayos of the University of Pangasinan; President Martin Posadas of the Virgen Milagrosa Educational Institution and our father, President Francisco Duque of Lyceum Northwestern.

The signing was for the formation of a consortium that will manage a College of Medicine in partnership with the Pangasinan Medical Society.

When erpat Dr. Paco died, the signatories agreed to separate the VMU from the Dagupan-based schools for administrative reasons.

Later, due to enrolment issues, the 3 Dagupan-based schools intimated that they dissolve the consortium due to administrative problems. Only LNU stayed and continued up to this day to run the medical school.

And so the presidents of the schools who backed out were paid their honoraria and their investments reimbursed.

Everyone was pleased. There was no air of discord. No money issues. They were honest, decent men.

Why have they remained such? Walang iringan, walang problema. Masaya lahat. They stayed as friends till their last days on earth. The beautiful memories of friendship up to now is intact.

We miss the company of these decent leaders of education in our province.

We really hope this kind of leadership in our educational institution is still in our midst these days.

But so sorry, one college president with the initials V. A. does not seem to fit the standard.

Saklap ng kapalaran.
