Young Roots
2012
By Johanne Margarette R. Macob
THREE hundred and sixty five days have passed since the time we embraced 2011 with enthusiasm and faith. Now, we are to embark into another year, with I wish the same if not an extra degree of optimism.
Farewell and thank you year 2011; and our warmest welcome to you year 2012!
As a Pangasinense, closing the year 2011 is a good feeling. As our governor said, “2011 was a good year”. Indeed, it was, particularly for Pangasinan. The province was able to progress in different aspects such as in culture and in the economy. The first culture and arts festival in the province was held last month. Also last month, the provincial government was able to extend aid to the people in the south, which was struck by flooding due to typhoon “Sendong” – a sign of generosity and the capacity to help out. Pangasinan also now ranks as the fifth best province in the country.
As a Filipino, though, 2011 was a so-so year. Well, the Philippines managed to survive despite numerous problems. However, many problems are still unresolved. One of these is the case of the Ampatuan massacre where many innocent people, many of whom were journalists, were killed. Another is the feud between the executive and judiciary branches of our government (or should I just say, between PNoy and CJ Corona?). I can go on and write a longer list of the burdens that beset our country, but since we already ended 2011, let us just optimistically look forward to 2012.
Personally, I believe that a new year symbolizes hope – new hope for people who just lost it; a renewal for those who are about to give up on it; and a reinforcement for the folks who continue to wish and dream. Opportunities come along with a fresh year. So, let’s get to know our new year better. What’s up in 2012?
For one, 2012 is a leap year, meaning it has 366 days instead of the usual 365 and there will be a February 29!
In the Chinese calendar, it’s the Year of the Dragon. Ask the experts what that means exactly, but all I’m sure about is that dragons are mighty animals!
According to Pantone, the color of the year is Tangerine Tango, described as “an orange with a lot of depth to it”. We might like to have something of that color!
Finally, year 2012, as many people have been saying, would mark the apocalypse or the end of the world. I remember a song about that, and I am sure many have seen the movie. Many calendars end in 2012 and even numerology says likewise. But no matter what, I remain optimistic that 2012 will offer the best for all.
We don’t know, and we will never know what is going to happen so the best thing for us to do is to continue improving our lives and that of our communities. And never forget to pray. We will have a great 2012 (fingers crossed)!
Happy New Year everyone!
