Zambales soon to have a new congressman

By Jun Velasco

Heaven is above all yet; there sits a judge that no king could corrupt.” — Shakespeare

IT must be our sad destiny to be subjected to nonstop bloody clashes and arrows of outrageous fortune.

We hope the ongoing “paglilitis sa Punong Mahistrado” will leave us a chastened but refreshed and stronger nation.

Skeptics are saying something worse is worming its way out of the fireworks.

The fact that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the very symbol of what is honest and of solid character, is on trial, very eloquently shows the system’s dynamism.  The bruises are there on a temporary basis. From the ruins will rise a great nation.

Last week, we already said that there’s no way Chief Justice Corona could win in the trial. He started on the wrong foot, a midnight appointee.

Let’s salute the defense’s initial victories, on points in the proceedings, on technicalities.

But a chief justice, a man with a supposed sacrosanct name blasted for — of all things — violations of law, corruption, ill-gotten wealth and others is a blasphemy.

Probably the next best thing to do is to draw the fire from the fireworks and focus the nation’s energy and hopes to guard and protect the sacredness of the judiciary.

It’s time to begin again…  treat the position of chief justice like Caesar’s wife, beyond suspicion, beyond reproach, with unblemished record and an untouchable name.

The nation should pick from the pieces fast and move on.

Now for the here and now. The idea of Wilson de Vera, Governor Espino’s consultant on foreign projects, to come up with a regional tourism cruise promises to be a top dollar earner. It would also showcase a ready market for local products.

His kin, educator Procopio de Vera of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, predicts a dollar bonanza from the project, citing foreign and local tourists feasting on the allures in the north in a seven-day cruise. Manning this effort is the Northern Explorer Development Corporation which vows to give tourists access to world-renown natural attractions and indigenous and marketable products when it docks in tourism-rich cities and municipalities that would reach the Hundred Islands, fish-rich Dagupan City and the Manaoag Pilgrimage center in Pangasinan, the alluring beaches of La Union, heritage sites of Vigan, the rice terraces and Camp John Hay in Baguio, Subic Bay in Zambales and others.

Pepe de Vera says his foreign contacts have expressed support for the cruise, adding Philippine education officials will try to include in their curriculum training of students to excel in the market worldwide.

You can’t hide a good one for long. This is what gourmet say after they dined at Sonny Co’s new restaurant behind the old Pedrito’s across Nel Ars on Arellano Street. Not only is their food tasty; they are nutritious and well prepared as well. Try their food, but beware you’ll get addicted to it.

Zambales expects to have a new congressman in Omar Ebdane, son of Governor Jun and Alma Ebdane. There’s a special election for the seat left by the late Congressman Tony Diaz anytime soon. Omar is expected to bring to the post the passion and dedication in public service exemplified by his father. Advance congratulations and good luck.
