Think about it
DCHNS, formerly DCHS Alumni Night
By Jun Velasco
“Keep thy heart with all diligence.” — Proverbs 4:23
AS in most school reunions and homecomings, the one Alumni Night of the Dagupan City National High school had last Wednesday at the city plaza could only be described in the superlative.
Yes to that.
During school reunions, we get transported to our most joyful days. Fact is, if we only have it in our power we’d want that special moment to stay forever. Right?
But do we?
Probably so if we are speaking only in the sense of our carefree-ness. But we don’t like to be stupid and irresponsible. Life, we know, isn’t like that. We have to move on. Our mature side would compel us to advance, to develop and grow to become productive citizens of the world.
After having our fill on the dance floor and in the intoxicating drinks, we realize that our enjoyable moments are temporary as the moon. We reflect, have we done well in life? Irretrievably, we think of the school, oh, our dear dearest Alma Mater, which has played a vital part of our development.
Of course, we tend to answer in the affirmative otherwise we would be admitting of failure and blaming the school which was supposed to train and educate us and prepare us for a future that fits our dreams.
In some articles we have written about DCNHS or, as in our time, DCHS, we said we couldn’t have written about it without being sentimental. That’s irresponsible. We lost sight of what we alumni ought to do in fairness to what we have done for ourselves as proud alumni.
Don’t look now. First test is the unfinished alumni building, Everybody feels it should have been done a long time ago.
We tried pricking the conscience of fellow alumni who for one or more reasons couldn’t make it. It’s a howling evidence of either lack of love for dear Alma Mater, probably for failing to hone that part of our upbringing that calls for love and concern for it.
So the school has not trained us well enough so that we could take care of it later? And so based on the “outstanding” proof of alumni ineptness, how could we justify the non-stop dancing and drinking and partying and voraciously claiming affinity to it?
We won’t tax your patience, dear schoolmates. But suffice it to say that some alumni assn officials like outgoing president Max Tan have done well, but maybe their well wasn’t good enough. We should do more.
The advent of a new team led by classmate Ope Reyna, his vice Manny Roy submits, will try to fill the vacuum. He said they will complete the building in less than a year! Fighting wirds. We are holding this tram for it.
Congratulations and good luck!

NOTES: How delightful like a merienda-for-the-soul to again hobnob with former schoolmates the likes of Lulu Malapit, Vangie Revadelo, Rex Catubig, Ramon Reyna, Bernie Jimenez, and Romy Zabala and their “angels” Lilia Jovellanos-Tuazon, Jean Ferrer Jimenez, Amy Macasieb, Charito Zabala Mercado, Nellie Calvero Sanchez and Bernadette Mendoza after many years!
