Obama facing well oiled Republican bets

By Gonzalo Duque

GOOD day to our readers!  We’re back from a grueling but enjoyable US trip.

Grueling? You bet. Because, as our neighbor Jun keeps saying, we’re “getting old.”

Look who’s talking ha ha! What can we do?

Most elderly will confirm this:  bones are getting brittle, hair thinning, eyes blurring, and walking is like that of a duck, sorry mga igan if we are spilling the beans.

Medyo masakit ha, but factual.

We were still groggy with jet lag when we called up the Punch, but somebody there said a lot of our readers have missed us. So here we are.

Mahirap din itong nagco-column sa Punch. We are a celebrity in the US. Magawagawa yay Ermin. The things we write here are known to them. Someone was even quoting our column word for word. Even those written by publisher Ermin, Jun Velasco, Al Mendoza and even Jess Garcia are known to them.

Of course, we also have critics, those who don’t agree with us. It’s normal, but in point of fact, mas madami ang mga fans. Our kababayan out there really miss home. We felt it again when we were there.

They are dedicating this song to us, “I miss you so” by the RJ and the Riots.

As soon as we stepped into Philippine soil, we immediately smelled the local air that’s exciting as ever.

Politics? You said it. But we’ll go to politics later, especially, our local brand in Pangasinan where… hmmm…. former Guv’nor Victor Agbayani is seen courting Guv’nor Spines’ ire no end.

In Dagupan, we just saw this newspaper head, “Ope Reyna opening a new door in Dagupan politics.”  Ay, we like this, pakulo nen pare Manny Baby ya siguro.

As we said, we’ll go political next time.

The US right now is now bracing up for the coming presidential elections. It seems President Barrack Obama of the Democratic Party is struggling to get reelected. His economic policies are misfiring. Not hitting the mark.

So the Republicans are having a field day choosing among Governors Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Rick Perry of Texas, businessman Herman Cain and former Speaker Newt Diengrith.

In their recent series of dates, we liked best Diengrith because he showed he was most prepared and knowledgeable in running the affairs of state.  While Romney and Perry are busy badmouthing each other, blacky Herman Cain is slowly inching his way to the top. But our choice is Newt D, who, because of experience, could deal with Congress most effectively.

There are Obama loyalists who say that he can more than make up for his unpopularity in his research on Philippine politics. He thought he could buy his way up.

We’d want Diengritch to win or, if slips, become vice president na lang sana.

We had a grand time with our kababayans out there the likes of the Filipino Americans Party of Americans members led by Diosdado Macaraeg and lovely wife, Dr. Irene who, because of gentle hands, made our dental care felt like heaven. Talagang ang gaan gaan ng kanyang kamay, masuerte ang kanyang mga pasyente.

The couple and their club have scholars at the LNU and a feeding program in Bonuan. They are fully supported by couple Chris Meneses, president of the Dagupenians Club, and his wife, Herminia.

Their club was able to unify Filpinos in Region l.

We bumped into Lacay Condring Estrella’s son, Jimmy at the residence of Larry Caem in San Jose, California. We were impressed by his low profile, kuhang kuha niya ang erpat niya.  By the way, his host, Larry Casem, who is a native of San Jacinto town, is an uncle of Kapitan Jake Reyes.

So, it’s nice to be back, fellas! We just heard our friends, former Councilor Hermie Casilang and famous Dagupeno, National Artist Salvador Bernal, recently died.

We offer their families our sincere condolences.
