Playing with Fire
Gina by the starlight
By Gonzalo Duque
A chance meeting with Fourth District Congresswoman Gina de Venecia proved to be uplifting. It’s been a long time.
The beauteous madam was bubbling with positive amenities. We wish to reiterate our congratulations to her for increasing the Regional Medical Center’s bed capacity to 600. That’s a great feat, mind you. We learned that she has been a consuming hard worker as a congress leader.
Since the inspiring lady solon, wife of former Speaker Joe de Venecia, has shown an exemplary acumen for getting things done, we wish to appeal to her to return the media center building that husband Joe gave the press club during the presidency of Jessie Perez. It is no longer in the hands of the club.
We learned that it was converted to a senior citizens center in that site near the Lingayen Gulf in Bonuan Gueset, Dagupan City.
We are at a loss on how this happened, but we won’t mind its conversion to what it is today. But we realized that at the rate the club is going – it’s going great guns, mind you — we hope Gina will grant us our wish.
Salamat po, madam Congressman!

A lot of people have reacted to our column item last week proposing the establishment of a community police precinct in barangay Tapuac. This is so because that barangay which has a dynamic leader in Kapitan Jake Reyes has become an education belt in Dagupan City. Several schools have mushroomed there, Lyceum Northwestern University, the Dagupan City National High School, Ednas School, Mother Goose, La Sallette, Dominican High School, La Maria Academy, and others. It is unthinkable that police visibility in that very populated area does not exist.
Time and again we hear about fraternity brawls on the campus and this has alarmed parents and the general public. If you please, our barangay which used to be labeled as “most barriotic” in the old days is now a pulsating education and business center as evidenced by the rows of motor shops, gas stations, restaurants, banks, and other establishments. We have discussed at length the idea of a community police precinct with the superintendent Gerry Roxas. And he appeared convinced about the proposal. We want to see how the whole idea becomes a concrete reality with the support of Congresswoman Gina, possibly Mayor Benjie Lim and Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, Councilors Alfie Fernandez and Chito Samson, and Brgy. Captain Jake Reyes.
Jake has shown his sensitivity to community problems. We have thanked him for his fast action on our suggestion that he freed Amado Street of hawkers who not only congest the area but also pose social problems. Anticipating favorable actions from these leaders, we say thank you from the bottom of our heart.

One of the stalwarts of the Pangasinan Press Club (PPC), Nestor Pulido will soon anchor a new project, “Democracy in Action,” a round table forum which aims to bring community issues to broadcast and television publics very soon.
Pulido has a weekly radio program at the DWPR. In case you don’t know yet, Nestor was former Vice President of GMA7 whose founder is an Uncle of his beautiful wife, the former Alice Jimenez of Dasol and Anda towns.
Nestor is the proud father of prize-winning television star Maki Pulido. He was a co-political detainee of Jun Velasco in Camp Aquino when Martial Law was proclaimed in the country. Expect great guns a- blazing in this new press club project.
