Playing with Fire
Media and police crime prevention
By Gonzalo Duque
AT the KBP forum last Thursday, we had a nice chat with Police Supt Gerry Roxas, spokesman of the Pangasnan PNP on some points we wish to share with you, dear readers.
You’re right, it’s about what our police are doing to ensure the peace and tranquility of our community.
First, we felicitate our brothers and sisters in the KBP for their sustained efforts in keeping the public informed about what the government is doing for them.
Our discussion centered on the police’s efforts in crime prevention. Roxas was articulate on this. What was stressed in the forum was the need to put up a police community precinct in Barangay Tapuac in Dagupan where the biggest high school — the Dagupan City National High School — is located. Many of you well know that reports about drug pushing and fraternity wars persist there.
We were told that our cops were less attentive to crime prevention measures, due to their penchant for reporting “vital statistics” not crime statistics.
In the forum, we also brought to fore regular reminders made by the Punch’s front-page people-to-people bulletin about unsolved gambling activities to Provincial Director Boyet Ricaforte. It seems this nonstop series by the Punch only too well show the police’s lack of responsiveness to community peace and order problems.
There are even persistent reports of jueteng in the province, particularly in San Carlos City and neighboring areas. We thought our favorite Governor is making a good name in the stamping out of illegal gambling drive in the province. We in the KBP and the local press club are always on the forefront of this campaign.
It may be overemphasizing a common fact, that all illegal activities are sure passports to destruction. When we highlight these things and their inimical effects to society, we are already issuing a warning against these pernicious and debilitating activities.
What really is the score, gentlemen?

The Pangasinan Press Club is moving smoothly in achieving its goals — short and long term.
We wish to thank past president Ruben Rivera for his dedication and fast action in amending the club’s bylaws. And also the members of his committee led by past president Allan Sison. We really hope our new unity and cooperation will lead us to accomplishing our goals.
On the reforms front, we are appealing to a few rascals who think less of the club but more of their personal and selfish schemes to give way to our program. We will not rest until we have achieved our goals. Kaya mag isip isip kayo mga abay. We are furnishing the officialdom and the business establishments in Pangasinan the names of the official PPC members and also seeking their support in not entertaining media impostors.
In our desire to straighten the club membership, we wish to announce that government information officers and out-and-out propagandists will cease to become regular members of the club. They will just remain associate members without voting rights.
