The Chinese now on top of the world!

By Gonzalo Duque

HELLO Cebu!

That’s right, mga igan. We thank the University of Visayas for gifting us with a doctorate last week. Know what? Our dissertation was the foundation date of Pangasinan, assignment natin yan kay Gob. Spines e.

In our defense, we stirred up a lot of talk about history, Philippine and world histories and related topics. We always get excited with history talk, you know.

But first, let’s talk about where we just came from. The first thing that attracts to the South is the Sto. Nino. Its feast day falls on our birthday, January l6.

Lively conversations with members of the acadame even led to the date of the Philippine islands founding date, listed as March l6, l52l. Our coffee and beer mates seemed to agree with us that it’s possible our fabled isles were discovered much earlier, say, in l4ll or sometime around that time… and by, whom, you ask, by, who else, but the Chinese!  Board Member Alfie Bince, who was a classmate of Truth Commission chair Hilario Davide during their UP days, told us that the first Pinoy traders invited to the Chinese mainland would testify to the theory of the Chinese’s pioneering role in our country. Of course, Filipinas was not yet called by that name, but the names ‘Lu-song (referring to Luzon) and “Pangchacillan” were already is use at the time.

It was put forward that even the first mass was not held in Limasawa, according to our co-discussant, but in Bolinao, Pangasinan! Mantakin ninyo yan?

So, the Chinese — the grandfathers and grandmothers of Mayor Benjie Lim and Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez — were very much ahead in coming to the islands. In fact, if you come right down to it, our National Hero, Jose Rizal, has a great fraction of Chinese blood in him. Ditto with President Noynoy Co Juang Co Aquino.

See, kaya, mga abay at mga igan, agkayo mankokolkol, ta saksakey so nanlapuan yo. Ay, oo nga pala, pati kaming mga Tiongson-Duque, galing din sa Chinese blood.

Please mark that. The Chinese were very much ahead of the Spaniards in colonizing the Philippines. Up to now, they are still here. In fact, they are lording it over here. The coming to town of SM and Robinson, as we wrote here last week, is a Chinese story.

Of course, our tribute to the Chinese here is not meant to deodorize President Aquino’s controversial decision to submit the hostage report by the De Lima commission to Hong Kong or China ahead of his fellow Filipinos.

Ok lang sa atin yan, anyway mababasa din nating lahat yan. Papaano masyadopng masigasig ang mga Intsik na makitya yong report because they were the victims. di ba, mga agagui? Sicayo met, congressman, tira kilan tirad satay makauna o kumadua? Porma lang yan, mga igan.

What did we say? The once powerful Spanish empire has been replaced by China? Tama yan, mga igan. Alam ninyo, kanya kanyang time yan e. It used to be Spain, then America, and now China. Of course, not officially, but you could tell by the present economic facts. Always forward and onward ang China, pero ang US pababa, even Japan.

Is this why even these canned sardines that are sold in the supermarket bears the mark, “Made in China?”

On July 28, we in the Pangasinan Historical Commission will start work officially, if Provincial Administrator Raffy Baraan will please confirm. Si Raffy ang boss dito per order of Gov. Spines. We need the legal expertise of lawyer-board members Alfie and Jaming Libunao here in this herculean but definitely exciting task.

We encourage attendance, or better, participation in the October l-2 Climate Change or Global Warming convention at the People’s Astrodome. We really need to be knowledgeable about the unusual changes in our climate and environment these days.

We were the first to sound you out about the prediction in the Mayan Calendar about the re arrangement of the planets that will happen on November l2, 20l2. It’s been confirmed by the top paranomal guru in the country, Prof. Jaime T. Licauco that as the planets move to a straight line, which happen every 26,000 years, natural devastations will occur.

In the light of man’s nonstop abuse of their environment in the name of economic progress — pollution, illegal structures, siltation, gas emissions, etc. the world is really on the verge of destruction. God forbid. But let’s watch out and prepare for any contingency.

Guest speakers include Philippine Info Agency Director General Joe Fabia and representatives of Climate Change Commission under Sec. Sonny Alvarez, DENR, and others. See you there.

NOTES: While President Aquino has banned billboard announcing their sponsorships of government projects, supporters put up a big billboard of Congresswoman Gina de Venecia for an infra project at the Mangaldan poblacion. This is in addition to her many other huge billboards in Dagupan City. Maybe, they don’t know Pnoy’s directive.
