MEDIA is once again under fire for doing what it did during the infamous hostage crisis at the Luneta.
This is a situation when it’s hard to find the right word to describe the correctness or idiocy of media’s behaviour in the hostage coverage. It’s of no moment now to join the babel of voices ganging up on the event.
In our huddles with Sonny Coloma, one of the two czars overseeing the national government media, and former Binmaley Mayor Joe Fabia, who, we smell, will replace Dodie Limcauco as head of the Philippine Information Agency, we see a consensus has emerged: there’s so much ranting over the botched job, which was, in point of fact, strictly a police matter.

— Capt. Rolando Mendoza –, and so, as Sonny and Joe would appeal, we should quickly refocus our energies on the better things that all Pinoys can do to continue the good things the new government has started doing to pull this country from the pits.
We believe, as we in Rotary love to say, “the future (of the country) lies in our hands.” Let’s moderate our negative tongue and instead quicken and double-time our efforts in sustaining the forward movement of Pinoy’s ship of state. We believe there’s no better course than this… for the sake of our children.

Sonny Coloma’s talk at the Manila Bay Breakfast Club last Thursday touched on what he is asking the government media and, more importantly, its private allies, to do more reporting about what’s going on in the countryside.
He was, in fact, echoing what we and Behn Fer Hortaleza learned from the late Greg Cendana in the 70’s about the feedback mechanism of government information efforts and to push to the backseat spoon-feeding of information material. Since it is the people who are the target of government programs, then it’s the sacred duty of media to show what has happened to these programs.
Why is this not being done? We are talking about government media outfits, not this one under Danny Sagun. Probably because first, most government mediamen are amateurs or plain lazy, because they are fired by the proverbial fire in the belly in doing government campaigns. They do not have the zest that run in the veins of the Communist propagandists. And so we posited the view that it should be a must for government mediamen to first cultivate a love or passion for the cause that they are fighting for. Failure to nourish that love affair will result in a lousy, if not bland, media program.
