Chito Samson sizzles
THIS column suffered a funny typo last week. The word “hyphen” instead of the “–” was inserted between the words “self” and “serving.” Thanks to our most thoughtful Julie Ann Arrogante, on-line editor, who upon seeing the missing “–” called up a copyboy to “insert a hyphen” meaning a dash or hyphen between “self” and “serving,” but the boy spelled it out producing the ridiculous head, “Ok kayo, Pinoy and Chiz, for ban of self hyphen serving billboards.”
Well, this just goes to show that even in this age of the Internet, such boners could still happen. Our apology.

Our cumpadre and “beerkada” of several years, Dagupan City Councilor Chito Samson– he with the big and permanently etched in red and blue paint political signboards all over the city– made headlines last week for denouncing the local police’s failure to stop illegal gambling.
Bravo there, Chito! The general public reaction is wholesome because here is a public official, riding a white horse in shining armor, calling for the stoppage of illegal activities. Who would be against that?
But Mayor Benjie Lim who, like Chito, is a “century-old pal, is wondering if the aging high-profile stance was serious.
“Bakit ngayon lang?” BSL seems to say… “akin ta natan limiwaway mata to?” … because Chito, chairman on police matters, has been in the council for many years.
Ikaw naman, Meyor, don’t be killjoy. Let Chito prove his mettle. Since it is a righteous cause, you and everyone are expected to support it fully.
Tignan natin how our friend and cumpadre will conduct himself for the sake of karaklan.
Mabuhay ka, Chito, and good luck. But wait, when we bumped into a couple of cops in the comfort room, their reaction to Chito’s tirade raised our eyebrows. When we told them “ininan to kayo nen Chito,” they almost replied at the same time, “singa agyo kabat si Chito, Sir?”
What did they mean? We urge Chito to collar the two cops to elaborate on that. Mahal natin ang kaibigan natin, and we are giving him 100% support to finish them off all, meaning, to put to a complete stop all forms of gambling in the city.

Millions of Elvis Presley’s fans around the world will be holding concerts and sing-along activities tomorrow, August l6 to mark his 33rd death anniversary.
It is a big surprise to us all how the great Pelvis has remained popular to this day. He has not advocated any great cause except his good voice and rock and roll talents.
Go to any videoke shop and you will not miss any local talent belting out an Elvis number. A friend says “it’s due to his purely singing power plus a magnetic personality that have made him unforgettable.”
Last year, our neighbor-cumpadre Jun V even held an Elvis night at his garden at his residence where friends came to sing ala-Elvis. Jun recalls that when he was brought by Atty. Johnny Primicias to an Elvis concert in Timog, where several Elvis impersonators converged, Jun saw that no less than then Press Secretary Toting Bunye was also an Elvis fan.
So here’s best wishes to all Elvis fans, although our favorite is Frank “Blue Eyes” Sinatra. You should listen to his “Cycles” and be a philosopher.
