Labir ti lan labir, agla nabirbir, maablir!

By Gonzalo Duque

WE are happy for President Noynoy for his extremely high trust ratings. At the same time, we are worried for him. It’s risky to be trusted too much. There’s the risk of non-realization of expectations.

But our instincts say Pnoy will be able to deliver. Let’s help him do it. Tayo rin ang magsa-suffer pag nagkataon.

Tama yong nagsabi na si P-noy ay isang political phenomenon. If he handles his presidency well, he would turn out to be the greatest President of this country. Yes, it’s a tall order. But that’s his fate, his destiny. Let’s help him. He needs everybody’s help and support for the good of the country.

The contra-Sona pointed out some valid points, but out of line and out of time. Why? Because our people are so enamoured with P-noy, they won’t listen to Edcel Lagman and his KJ group. Probably what we should do with them is take for their warning as paalala lang. That’s also ok. It’s really better to be careful than jubilant all ther time. Sabi ng ating high school proverb, daig ng maagap ang isang masipag.

What made P-noy click was his battlecry, “walang mahirap pag walang kurap.” As a battlecry, ok. But he as well as we should be able to make it real. It’s a dream come true, but we tell you, it’s tough business. It’s not a walk in the park. It’s, in fact, war. Let’s go to battle with P-noy then and fight hard to win over and against this human weakness.

What inspires us is his resolve to reform and upgrade our educational system. So be it. Again, we say, that’s tough business. He’d need lots of money to implement his educational reform program. For instance, his plan to increase the basic education years from grade 6 to grade 7 and the high school years just like in the developed countries is correct. This column has been advocating that since way back. Tama lang na maisakatuparan na.

In point of fact, education should be P-noy’s Programa Numero Uno. From it will rise all reforms and development programs. A country that is not educated would be mired in ignorance and poverty. It can’t hope to be great and progressive.

As the nation observes nutrition month, we wish to point out that a wholistic education program should factor in child development even at the stage when it is still in its mother’s womb. A pregnant mother’s health then should be uppermost in a child’s educational rearing. The child’s fullest development is from birth to four years old. The child’s growth should be carefully watched in those critical years.

Councilor Jig Seen told us the Sanggunian Panlungsod finally swooped down on the city’s notorious illegal fish pens.

Ok kayo, mga igan, kaya lang parang bitin na, kasi matagal na nating babambooen itan. You should prosecute the city agriculturist for making all of us look tanga for a long time.

She even behaved dumb and blind to the Punch’s weekly reminders against the illegal fishpens. But prosecuting the guilty and implementing the ordinance against illegal fishpens is in Mayor Benjie Lim’s ball court now.  He was elected partly because he fought hard the illegal fishpens. We hope Benjie won’t dilly dally on this because the people of Dagupan are incensed and very angry at the city government’s over extended inaction against the abuse to our Number One industry — fishing.

Labir ti lan labir ed world famous and world class Dagupan bangus, ag ti met  balet la nabirbir ta akisakey la ray  bangus na Navotas, Malabon tan arum nira.  Ay, Maablir!

We felicitate fellow Dagupeno Dante Velasco for his appointment as DOTC undersecretary.  He is the brother of our neighbor Jun, provincial information officer Butch and bank manager Norman. Dante has been working under DOTC Sec. Jose “Ping” de Jesus in the private sector and a friend of Executive Secretary Jojo Ochoa.

Congratulations!
