Zambales’ delicious mangoes

By Jun Velasco

AT press time, we heard losers Kim Lokin and Arthur Celeste were filling election protests against Congressman-elect Pol Bataoil and reelected Mayor Nani Braganza.

This confirms the joke that in Philippine elections, there are only winners and whiners that they were “cheated.”

Jess Garcia suggests the protesters undergo a “reality check.”

We admire the skills of local pundits analyze the winning and the losing of the candidates from the presidential to the councilor level.

But in our book, Noynoy’s landslide victory is a tribute to political mantra — divine justice to Ninoy’s sacrifice and Cory’s unfinished presidential task.

Noynoy’s  “ituloy ang laban” has landed in the hearts of the electorate.

But he needs every help to put this country back on its feet.

In a recent trip to Candelaria, we bought a basket of Zambales’ reputable mangoes.

We wanted to see the truth about the fruit’s ballyhooed “makes you crazy” taste.

In an interview at his palatial residence beside the China Sea in Candelaria, Governor-elect Jun Ebdane says he has in his “to do” list the improved production and worldwide  market plan for the Zambales mangoes. The tasty mango derives its deliciousness to the province’s peculiar soil.

In the same vein the sweet papaya and pomelo fruits of Davao is due to Davao soil. The environment has something to do with the taste.

In Dagupan, our bangus has a world-class marketability due to its breeding place — Bonuan’s fishponds.

Some people love to compare Jun’s mangoes to those we have in abundance in Pangasinan or/ and Guimaras. He insists that his mango is the best in the world. In the not too distant past, former President Fidel V. Ramos was overheard as promoting Guimaras mangoes. Maybe, Jun says, that was before he tasted our mangoes.

Former Dagupan police officer Capt. George Cusi observes that Filipinos abroad always miss  our local fruits  especially mangoes. Grapes and other foreign fruits have foreign tastes, says George.

Back to Zambales. Because he won by landslide, Zambalenos expect Jun Ebdane to make the province No. 1 nationwide in infra and peace and order, his cup of tea.

His other targets include Chromite development, further upgrading of Zambales’ scintillating miles-long shoreline “which can shame Boracay and those in Bolinao, Anda  and Bauang, La Union.” Tourism will be a priority in Jun’s Zambales plan.

Gifted with an acumen for getting things done in record time and organizing people, the top cop and kalsada expert-turned politician says, “with everybody lending a hand we shall build Zambales a world model.”

Tall order? Well, he stood ten feet tall when he made the remark.
