Ashok’s 2nd birthday and the nation

By Jun Velasco

A FRIEND-cumpadre in Dagupan Rotary and ‘Conquerors’ circles, Ashok Vassandani, marked his “2nd” birthday yesterday. Breakfast thanksgiving with the Conquerors at Pedritos.

His “2nd birthday” bash in a span of three weeks. The first was on May l.

“It’s a second celebration,” says Ashok, “because the first one was my chronological birthday, this one is my spiritual birthday.”

We were impressed by his audacity to separate the chronological and the spiritual in his life. Yesterday was when Ashok found God. Hallelluja!

We wish to connect our friend’s re-entry to life in our quest for our country’s dying several times. Yes from the seemingly insoluble problems that have crushed it.

We need to have a new birthday, like Ashok, yes, away from the gargantuan mess we’re in…  one where we can kick away all these that have put us, our country down… yes, for  the sake of our children and ourselves.

As we sat to talk with you, dear readers (writing this column is like talking to you weekly), we were meaning to present a joyous note of hope after this much maligned government turned in a new leaf …  for mobilizing our electoral system successfully.

Who wouldn’t get excited, mind you?  A magnificent feat of the Comelec and, despite the blows raining lately on its face, Smartmatic?

Midnight of May 10, 2010, we felt like running onto the streets and hugging and embracing the Comelec for a job well done.

Premature celebration?  Out there in many local contests, things are coming back to the same old murk.

But we are an incorrigible optimist. We never give up looking for a ray of hope than cursing the darkness.

As we paced the room, we remembered brother Norman and our friend Ashok, the Conquerors, them who tenaciously cling to that all-abiding faith in the One who really delivers.  Let’s pray for deliverance from this trap, from this vicious cycle of defeat and hopelessness.

In that circle of young and a few old community and business leaders of Dagupan called Conquerors, you have a bond of friendship, love and closeness to God. They sing, they pray, they laugh and they joke and the one thread that runs through everyone is the Lord’s spirit, every body’s readiness to leave everything to the Redeemer, the Listening Post, the gentle hand that touches everyone.

Besieged by the forces of doom and aggravated by a mindless media, let’s turn to the transcending authority to bless our land.

It’s been too long, Lord. Please lead us out of the mess.

ZAMBALES NEWS. Gov- elect Jun Ebdane has inspired hope among his fellow Zambaleños for offering himself as their governor. He beat his archrival, the veteran re-electionist Amor Deloso by almost 30,000 votes in the elections. He was former Dagupan Station Police Chief, Pangasinan Police Director among other high posts in gov’t before his ascent to national police chief and DPWH Secretary. He opted to “come home” to his roots before he courts his greater calling.
