Think About It

Why are they killing Noynoy’s ascent to the presidency?

By Jun Velasco

SINCE Day l, the present dispensation – this confederation of hordes and corrupt forces of the political establishment — has been assiduously at work to thwart the rise of Senator Noynoy Aquino to the   presidency.

Many “people” – happily, not the majority, as the prestigious survey groups show — hate him for being a Simon Pure single-mindedly rejecting corruption, power grab and unfair get-rich-quick schemes.

Why do run-of-the-mill politicians dislike him?  Because they will not have their way anymore if and when he becomes president. There will be no more cornering of juicy contracts. No more secret deals that fatten the crooks, no more “commissioners” and “ten-percenters” of the despicable type.

We know some big time businessmen who are now biting their nails each time they read about the surveys of Noynoy’s imminent victory.

We think the son of a national hero and well-loved former President will, if he is already there, lay down new rules of the game, to make it impossible for the corrupt to do their thing in his government.

Under him, the much-abused word “human nature” will no longer mean selfishness, but thank your stars, kindness, showing man in his true and great light devoted to leveling the playing field.

Noynoy would be a killjoy for naively calling on everyone to follow the rules applied equally to both rich and poor.

Those who have been pampered by the establishment — the masters of the short cut, the wheeler-dealers want nothing of Noynoy, that’s a given.

But man’s positive, we say, true and genuine side – this should be our real human nature – will shine in the light of what true leadership means. We believe this is why Noynoy’s popularity has skyrocketed.   The Filipino people have seen clearly his heart, yes amidst the maze of propaganda.

Noynoy is rocking the boat of the privileged few. Their days are numbered, so to speak. But the millions are dancing in their hearts. We, Filipinos, have long missed the day we’d have a rule of law, fair play in this beautiful land.

In Manila, Noynoy’s candidate for mayor, re-electionist Alfredo Lim, has immortalized this frame of mind — or heart, if you will — in those big billboards that say: “The law should be applied to all or none at all.”

But there are still the Smart Alecks in our midst, they who would not mind using their high government positions to influence the rule makers so that they can continue amassing billions of pesos. But for sure, as the avalanche of Noynoy supporters shows, their tribe is on the decline. Great wealth has ceased to be the epitome of virtue. Not anymore.

We present Noynoy as logically filling a vacuum in Philippine politics because it’s been too long since this Pearl of the Orient has been mired in morass.

His being thrust in the presidential equation must have surprised him too. Why not?  Certain quarters still malign his track record in Congress and the Senate. And, hmmm … his mental fitness. But no matter.  They believe him.

He perfectly fits our thesis that there are great leaders in the history of humankind who did not plan their ascent to greatness. Greatness, you see, should be unconscious. If it’s conscious, it’s fake. His mother, Cory Aquino, a plain housewife, never wished to become president.

Jose Rizal’s story is classic. Mahatma Gandhi did not aspire to be the leader of India, but he stood out as one of the greatest leaders of the world by simply working for what is good for his country. Christ was teaching the simple truths about love and life, and those who saw and heard him did not want to part with him anymore.

Noynoy saw what sacrifice for La Patria means. His parents showed it. It is our good fortune to have seen it unfold before our very eyes.  Yes, some 42 percent of us according to the latest SWS, are telling the nation they agreed with Noynoy. It’s time we changed. The search for a new leader is about over. Let’s hope and pray the Comelec and Smartmatic, and, yes, President Arroyo, won’t spoil our appointment with destiny.
