Exemplary gentleman

By Gonzalo Duque

WE are happy to learn that Mayor-elect Benjie Lim this early has begun to take concrete steps to correct certain errors that have affected the outgoing administration.

One of them is the hard-headed posturing of these illegal fishpen operators who have been accused of bringing havoc, instead of robust harvest, to the city’s marine life.

We heard that in an informal meeting at Lenox last Tuesday evening, Mayor Lim was reported deadset in finishing off the “reign of greed” of these illegal fishpen operators. You will notice that the Punch has been pounding on this issue for almost one year now, and yet the city government has chosen to play deaf and blind to the call for accountability about the illegal fishpens issue.

In that informal meeting, former Barangay Tapuac Captain who subsequently became association of barangay captains president of the city Alfredo Dawana was present. We learned that Benjie sort of commissioned him to join the anti illegal fishpens task force. Perfect move, Benjie. Kuya Apring knows the problem like the palm of his hands. Could this mean the end of the river for the illegal fishpens in Dagupan City?

Dapat lang, di ba? Cheers to Benjie for that! Kung ganyan ba lagi e, Dagupan can be great again!

We were all witnesses to the exemplary conduct of former Defense Sec. Gilbert Teodoro — Gibo, for short — in the last presidential campaign.

Always distancing himself from the mudslinging type of campaign, Gibo has endeared himself with the young and students for his high-level demeanor.

Were it not for his image as a sure loser, we could have backed him to the hilt.

But you see, politics is the art of the possible. And in the big picture, it’s Noynoy who was the perfect choice in the last polls. In our case, we belong to the Liberal Party, and so Noynoy was our natural choice.

Not only that. Noynoy is the son of Tita Cory who named us OIC-vice governor of Pangasinan in l987. And he has a hero, a national hero at that, for a father,  Ninoy. Well, you can say a lot of good things abiout him.  The rest is history. Pinapalakpakan na siya ng buong bansa, ng buong Asya, ng buong mundo.

But outside of Noynoy– and we congratulate the Filipino voters for choosing him — our second choice was Gibo. All throughout the presidential debates and 20l0 “basingkawel” we found Gibo a clear darling of everyone. The only problem was yong pananalo. Wala talaga. Talagang sayang. Our heart bleeds for a young, clean, straight-forward and brilliant presidentiable. Maybe it was not his time yet. Next time, we hope, it will be his time.

Vote Gibo for prersident in 20l6!

We wrote here during the campaign period about Noynoy’s ideas and plans for upgrading education in the country. We are restating these ideas. In our view, nothing is more vital and crucial than the upgrading of Philippine education.. lahat na ay No. 2.

If our voters are all educated and enlightened, you cannot corrupt them. Their values would improve. And so, we always say that, in the words of Sec. Lesli Lapus, “edukasyon ang solusyon.”

Our old idea to increase the elementary years by two still stands. Noynoy is in favor of it. We really need to strengthen the young’s foundation. It’s been observed that the reason our country is lagging behind its Asian neighbors is not corruption, but our people’s inability to adjust to the times. Di ba edukasyon yan, mga igan?
