Playing with Fire
Give Noynoy much needed breather muna
By Gonzalo Duque
IT was most inspiring as well as historic when the nation was able to get over the recent national and local elections is the quickest and therefore cleanest manner.
But it seems Filipinos are indeed Filipinos. Parang totoo talaga ang bintang nila sa atin na pag elections, walang natatalo, mayron lang “winners and the cheated.” Agay met layan kapalaran tayon Pinoy awa, Pare Spines!
It really makes one get that sinking feeling when you hear all sorts of complaints, grumblings, charges of cheating, dagdag bawas, and so on, ad infinitum. Singa wala ng katapousan ang pablema ng mundo, awa Mama Libreng? Ay Katawan, kasian mo kami. Agla kasi ontonda yay pablema, a Mama Libreng?
At this juncture, let’s praise Mayor Al Fernandez for being such a good sport. He was, as the Punch quoted him last week after it was established that he lost, he said he would continue to help in any way for the good of the city. Maraming naiiyak, kasi maksil si Mayor Al, ni nengneng yo, analoy bise tan waloran konsehales to — Belen Fernandez, councilors-elect Maybelyn Fernandez, Jess Canto, Karlos Reyna, Dada Reyna, Jigs Seen, Alfie Fernandez, Chito Samson (ay, congrats, pare Chito, adaddawit ka la ha?) and Alvin Coquia. Only two councilors-elect — Brian Lim (who was Number 2) and Red Erfe Mejia — came from Mayor-elect Benjie Lim’s ticket.
Anyway, let’s forget the bruises of the past elections ha? Let’s move on. Aha, Mayor Benjie, agmon balet lilingwanan may major concerns of the city that have not been addressed properly ha — a new spanking city hall, the dismantling of the illegal fishpens, and a public market for the common folk.
The Malimgas market is, indeed, beautiful, but let’s also give space to the poor vendors who want to live fruitfully and decently. Know what? The reason many poor vendors were openly crying when Al lost is because they thought doomsday has come back to them. They said you, Mayor Benjie, are preoccupied with big, global, modern and “pang-tourism” projects, but you have little space daw for them. That is why we are saying it now. Asikasom pa ira tay kaparan pobre ha,cumpadre mayor? Salamat ya baleg.

We wish to restate our dismay with the way unsportly defeated politicians continue to badmouth everyone. And they are getting support from an unimaginative media that want to feast on the negative. Pareng Ermin, Jun V, wala ba tayong policy dito para ang bayan ay mailayo naman sa mga destructive commentators?
The first problem is most of our media people love to feast on the sensational. They don’t select their material. When someone — yes, just anyone — dishes out negative news or even plain ugly rumor to the anchor radioman thru their cellphones, patira lang ang pet peeve, naku, makapataktakot, agagui! Akalain mo, sa text messsage lang, bira agad sa radyo yes, without the benefit of investigation. From what school of journalism did this kumanintators get their courses, so that they could rapid-fire their radio audience with all sorts of info, especially negative without any back-up of evidence or proof so long as the texter is their friend or kliyente.
If you ask us, the election of Noynoy to the presidency is a crowning glory of the people’s desire to break from the stranglehold of corruption. Napakalaki ang agwat, ang margin niya sa pumapangalawa, si Erap. Five million votes na tumataginting! Tapos iniintriga si Erap na kesyo asaol daw, naniniwala naman, followed by the noises of the prophets of doom, yes, prophets of the country’s destruction… for how would you describe this group that beats its breasts when things are getting awry? We have no name for them. But let’s hope and pray that malalampasan ng Pinoy ang lahat ng ito Mantututolongan tayo, agagui.
