Making a difference

By Jun Velasco

READ veteran newsman Orly Guirao’s special report on Noynoy’s bandwagon in Ilocandia in the Business Mirror today’s issue. A Marcos loyalist, Orly predicts a Noynoy victory nationwide including the Ilocos.

For four days since Friday, the local police and volunteers have been excavating an old well in Bonuan Binloc where the skeletal remains of Ani Lagao’s son, Himmil, were allegedly dumped after a falling out with his drug pusher-friend 3 years back.

Since the young Lagao intimated a desire to return to his family, his “captor friend” suddenly changed his attitude.  Himmil disappeared on the night of Jan. 27, 2007 after talking to his pa. After that the family has been in deep and uninterrupted anguish.

Himmil’s tormentor is known to be  “well connected,” thus delaying solution of the crime. Ani reports that most of what they unearthed from the well were some of the boy’s paraphernalia like his brief.

This is a challenge to the police whose long delayed action also merits investigation.

Former military officers like FVR should not be feared if they join the elective public service like Amado Espino, Pol Bataoil, Jun Esperon, Rey Velasco, to name a few. Instead of fearing their military personas, put them to hard civilian work.

Spines and Rey have shown their effective leadership, and the province and Sta. Barbara town are lucky beneficiaries. The fear by certain quarters reminds us of the Russians who are still imagining a Communist shroud under a democracy in the Soviet Union.

The transformation of Sta. Barbara into a modern municipality under Mayor Rey Velasco speaks of gentle hand who genuinely cares.

WE are about to have   suspenseful national and local elections.

The political exercise will surely be marred with irregularities and post-election conflicts . . . but in the end, an honest choice will prevail. Are we positive about it?

Yes, because all the corrective avenues are being put to work to thwart a failure. We believe the administration would be wary of a backlash from any sinister plan to derail the elections.  But still and all, we should be vigilant against failure. And let us pray.  Prayers, let’s not forget, will work wonders.

At the “Oo Na, Noynoy Na” Tarlac-Baguio cycling race last Sunday, watchers did not fail to notice “Asahan Mo” partylist tarpaulins in the long convoy. The partylist headed by Omar Ebdane seeks to champion the welfare of the children, women and the disabled. These are old issues, but his partylist wants to make a difference.

Omar, by the way, is the muscled, good-looking son of Jun Ebdane who is a leading gubernatorial bet in Zambales.  As the leader of Asahan, Omar has overnight rallied several sectors for their support.

In a casual chat, Omar says, “children, women and the “differently- abled” have been getting no more than lip service in Philippine Society.”  His group, he says, “will work doubly hard to make it real.”

NOTES: JdV and FVR, we heard, will declare for Noynoy soon. Dapat lang ano?… We were guests at barangay Lobong fiesta in San Jacinto, and we saw Manang Celia’s much improved speech skills.  You could hear sound of a needle falling as she spoke. Talo si BSL sa public speaking. She is catching up Gina’s lead.
