The LPs should seize the day

By Jun Velasco

IT should not be hard to see through the warps and then of the May 10 elections. Go back to the first public outcry, the outpouring of our people for a leadership that will end this unwanted regime. Isn’t the Liberal Party looming as the best cut above the rest? The party’s local leaders are ignoring their edge because of parochial politics. They should seize the day.

* * * *

Last Thursday, we drove our grand children Chiki and Choko, accompanied by Mama Libot (that’s how Dr. Cathy is called by the two), around Metro Manila en route to a kiddie restaurant to fete Chiki who was to mark her 11th birthday Friday.

Being probinsyano and probinsiyana from Binmaley town, we thought the duo who were vacationing at Loyola Heights, were awed by the big city’s metro look. But no, they were instead amused by the political signages. They were busy counting the cars, trucks, vans, taxis and tricycles with the Noynoy ribbon sticker and Villar’s orange check sticker.

They came out with 34 against Manny Villar’s only 2 orange “check” signs.

Whoever thought of that yellow ribbon insignia was a political genius. Children with no idea of politics — especially this one that we publicly despise but couldn’t help without — love it. Pinagpistahan.

We are in Manila every week, almost without fail, and we noticed that the Noynoy edge over well, who else, Villar was overwhelming lately. We thought the recent Villaroyo media has hurt the NP bet very hard.

It’s a little more than a month before election day, and it looks like it’s an Aquino victory by a mile. The so-called statistical tie that raged for a while last month has been effectively dumped in the garbage heap.

Barring a super group’s sinister plan to derail the election to preserve the status quo, it’s the yellow man by an overwhelming margin. What kicked Villar from the totem pole contention was the well-publicized secret First Gentleman’s alleged call on the Garcias of Cebu to back Villar to the hilt.

That call, whether real or just a political gimmick, has dealt the Villar campaign a death blow. It drew the ire of administration bet Gilbert Teodoro a lot, but his retaliatory act was just too mild and too late now in the political equation.

Discerning observers say Gibo’s legendary brilliance was doused by his wrong choice of party.  It would be useless now to break free with his in-house tormentors.

Because of the trouble at the top, we won’t be surprised if Erap eventually would fill in Villar’s shoes in the end game and give Noynoy a semblance of a contest while the NP bet would be licking his boots in the cold. Hmmm.. sayang, the billions in his campaign kitty have gone with the wind  because of the much   dreaded  “kiss of death,” now a reality in Philippine politics circa, 20l0.
