Another look at surveys or “sorbeteses”
By Gonzalo Duque
WE were caught in a spirited conversation in Dagupan last week. Many of our friends and known fiends alike told us sayang daw because brod Pingkoy, the secretary of health, did not run for senator. He should have made it easily especially had he run under the Liberal Party.
But, while we were flattered by their good words, we deep inside were happy that brod decided against it at this time. He has been a circumspect guy and his contributions to the country in the health department has made us in the family proud of him. Let’s hope and pray that he would do well, too, in the Civil Service Commission. For everything, we thank God for His guidance.

You must have noticed how some people go nuts over political surveys. We used to call them “sorbetes,” because many of those stuffs are for sale. Look at some brokers working wildly to beef up Gibo’s ratings. They cite his excellent performance in handling the Maguindanao massacre and the recent Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
Well, they have a good point. But it’s political season, and any pakulo is suspect. Let the election results decide na lang.
But we salute Gibo’s one-liners and bright repartees during press forums and interviews. Don’t forget that we predicted in this column that the presidential race would be fiercely fought among Noynoy Aquino, Manny Villar and Gibo. All the rest would be also-runs.
We could only wish the senatoriables from Pangasinan good luck, namely, Joey de Venecia, Raul Lambino and Monching Guico. As to their winning chances, we prefer to remain silent… in the meantime.

By the way, our column item about Manang Celia Lim as a potential winner in the congressional race in the Fourth District has earned 40 or so text messages all saying “your choice is our choice” or words to that effect.
We did not expect that avalanche of positive reactions to our column item. Someone said, “Are you not supporting Benjie also?”
Our reply was always “time will tell.” At this juncture, we heard balikbayan Alfredo Dawana was looking for us last night. Bakit kaya? Aha, baka, gusto na niyang magfile ng kaso against the illegal fishpen operators. It was Alfred or Apring who started this issue even before he went to the US. We told the emissary he could contact us anytime. We gave to the guy our cellphone number.
Naku ma-Ombudsman itan! Bakit kaya? Why can’t they implement the anti illegal fishpen ordinance?

Our Rotary Christmas party was a big success. We missed Judge Emma Molina, although her absence was compensated by the presence of another judge, Grace de Vera, a future president of Rotary Club of Uptown Dagupan. Reelectionist Councilor Dada Reyna did a great job in assembling our Rotarian group. Iboto yo a? Maong ya ogaw itan.
