RP to produce world-class athletes

By Gonzalo Duque

WE are on the road to producing world-class athletes.

This became evident recently with the initiatives and efforts of the Commission on Higher Education and the Philippine Sports Commission to develop Filipino athletes to world-class variety.

How are we going to do it?

Take it from CHED chair Manny Angeles and PSC chair Harry Ang Ping, both our buddies.

First, congratulate the PRISSA for successfully staging the first leg of the Region I games last Friday at the Narciso Ramos Sports Center. And thank Gov. Spines and the provincial government for their efforts.

The plan is, after that, athletes of the private schools will compete with those of the state colleges and universities in January next year.

Ultimately, we’d be able to pick the best athletes in the region who will later compete in the national games. Both private and public will be on deck and therefore mark the selection of  “who is who” in national sport in line with President Arroyo’s integrated sports program.

This private-government approach in the country’s search for student sportsmen and sportswomen is the first in the country.  We’re lucky to have been involved in the formulation of the program. We were a co-signatory to a memo of agreement between the CHED and PSC and the Association of State Colleges and Universities headed by Dr. Tacvas.

Let’s salute our sportsmen and women who, because of this program, are expected to become world champions.

The grapevine always oozes with talks that our friend Benjie Lim is dead serious in retaking his mayoral post. We advise him to be serious this time, or else, he would be a serious case.

Joking aside, he is the only Dagupan leader who can give Mayor Al Fernandez a run for his money. Pareho nang mayaman ang  dalawang yan ngayon. Kung nagkataon, sasaya ang mga botante, you know what we mean.

Chiz Escudero must have realized by now that it’s not easy to aspire to become president. He is still young. Maybe, next election, ok na siya, but that would become uncertain because new superstars will emerge.

He better support the move to change the constitution thru a ConCon so that the law on presidential qualifications would favor the election of the poor and young. We also advise him to help restore the two-party system to enliven our democratic institution.  Magaling yan si Chiz, kaya lang maeta ni.

Many have been asking us about the political plans of brod Pingkoy.

Well, if you are asking us, we don’t favor his running at this time. Maybe in some other time in the future.

He should know where his heart belongs and what gratitude means. We hope the Lord will guide him in making this crucial political decision. It’s hard to detoxify the opiate effects of politics, you know, as we ourselves went through in the past.

We condole with our senior adviser Joe Aoanan for the demise of his beloved Concordia who died at age 84.  She was a very sweet woman. We saw this when we saw the couple at their residence. Kuya Joe will surely suffer the pangs of loneliness for days and months and, let’s pray that he’d be able to fight off loneliness soon.
