Young Roots
’tis the Season…
By Therese Soriano
I GET easily attracted to colorful decors along the streets that I couldn’t take my eyes off of them especially those uniquely done. I have one particular place that never fails to attract people’s attention especially those jitney passengers like me. On my way home, I always look forward to seeing these houses decorated with bright, colorful Christmas lights all over which is located at Barangay Doyong, Sitio Baba, Calasiao.
I felt like being somewhere else. Just by seeing the view, makes me feel relaxed and relieves me from the stress of the day. I kind of find it funny when the jitney automatically slows down when passing by these houses. I guess they too are amused and want to take a look at the magnificent view.
I always imagined to be looking at the beautiful sights as long as I want to. Fortunately, Ate Tina, my mentor, made it possible for me to be up close the bright colorful lighted houses whose owners are her neighbors. Of course, I also met the people behind these bright ideas. First, I met Kuya Rene Rosal and his wife Ate Myrna Rosal. When they bought their house four years ago, they started decorating it with bright colorful lights whenever holiday season comes near. They believed that by doing this, it would bring them luck. Kuya Rene’s family was inspired with their ideas and so they too did their own version of decorating their houses. Lastly, I met Mr. Samuel Ballesteros who started with simple lighting decorations that evolved eventually and yearly he plans for another set of designs. As early as October, the neighbors start planning and decorating. When asked about their bills they all just smiled and said, “It’s Christmas!” They all said that since Christmas is celebrated once a year they try to make the best out of it by decorating their homes, which has become an activity that the family works on together during the season.
By seeing these houses, I feel that Christmas (season) is indeed fast approaching and people have been very busy preparing for it. Even before the month of December started, people busied themselves on decorating their houses with colorful decorations that has been a tradition for all of us. I take part in this tradition by helping my family in putting out decors, which has become a fun filled activity that we often do when the holiday season comes. I guess you should try it too. I see it as a way of strengthening bonds. And if you need to be inspired you can come and see these houses.
