New CHEd czar, a fresh wind in RP education

By Gonzalo Duque

THE appointment of former Clark Development Corp. president Emmanuel Angeles to the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) chair as replacement of Romulo Neri is well deserved.

Manny, being the overlord of the Angeles University Foundation for so many years now knows the nuances and subtleties of education and government service and would easily enable him to balance the different interests in the CHEd.

We were together before he was appointed by the President, and we found his discourses on Philippine education unassailable, correct and practical. We predict good things for the education sector with him at the helm. Although he is a Pampangueno, Manny is by our detached and objective account the fittest man for the job.

He is a lawyer, and there’s no gainsaying the need for a lawyer or a man with sufficient knowledge of the law in the Ched.

As to his fitness in health, Manny, in case you don’t know yet, is a sportsman. He was our predecessor in the PRISSAA.

A former Philippine Jaycees stalwart, Manny is an active member of the presidential task force on education, thus giving him an expert, first-hand and commanding view of education issues.

His background and extensive experience in university management and other areas makes him well-prepared for siring world-class professionals and workers whether of the blue or white collar classifications. Our interaction with education leaders from all parts of the world have given us a closer look on his preparedness for his new task, for which the whole nation is hoping and praying would be a success.

Sana magpakabata ka pa, Manny, dahil mahirap at mabusisi ang trabaho diyan sa kinalalagyan mo ngayon. But his common sense and practical wisdom which have plotted his rise in all his endeavors will surely enable him to ride whatever crisis he will encounter at the CHEd.

It is common knowledge that some people, in their mistaken belief that there’s no substitute for occupying a high position in government, are often open to health abuse.

We’ve always said, health is wealth. You might prefer to stick to your high paying job, but when it corrodes your health, it’s time to change horses. As a village wag would say, “Either kursunada ka ng pulitika o pulitika ang kusunada.”

Also, as a parting shot, when you are in government or public service, huwag kang onion skinned, maybe Union cement skinned, pwede pa. In English, you must be kapal muks in the right sense.

We wish to congratulate the following for making the Lyceum Northwestern University proud.

They are Maregina Geismundo, Florina David, Genarale Allen Jason and Angelina Siapno for landing in the top-20 list in the last licensure exams for nurses.

Also, we felicitate Optometry board topnotchers Voltaire Siapno Tada, Cecilia Agnes Tamondong and Renando del Mundo who placed first, 2nd and seventh places respectively in the last board,

In Civil Engineering, Ser Anthony Bravo finished 20th in the recent board.

We view these achievements with jubilation and thanksgiving to the Lord and you, dear countrymen.

In our party honoring them at Mayor Al Fernandez’ Fishpond, this inspiring fact was noticed by the common folk: the Fernandez family is a suki of LNU. Mantakin, the mayor finished his doctoral and masteral on public administration at LNU. Ditto with sons Alvin and Alfie, and lately, kins Geismundo and Florina David. Alvin has been elected chairman of the 2008 alumni homecoming to be held at the city plaza sometime in December. Ciao!
