A Kabaleyan’s Thoughts…
MacArthur landed in Lingayen
By Paul M. Verzosa
Lingayen Beach Landing, Jan 9, 1945– The photographer during his sentimental visit told my father, MCV, that he took the picture behind the Capitol bldg. (lol, hindi sa Tondaligan!)
In the Leyte landing photo, Sergio Osmena and Carlos P. Romulo waded the shore with MacArthur. (Balita ko hindi na isinama si Romulo sa Lingayen landing dahil muntik ng nalunod sa Leyte. Paglukso ata ni 6 footer na MacArthur, lumukso din si Romulo!)
First words of MacArthur at the Lingayen Landing:
MacArthur (looking towards the Maniboc area. double-check the photo)- “What’s that foul smell? Japanese shit?”
Aide de camp – “No sir. Bagoong sir. Smells hell but taste heaven sir.”
Kidding aside, a witness during the landing told me that the General proceeded to Dagupan using the Libsong Rd instead of the Maramba Blvd. Sira siguro yung Marambe Bridge dahil sa bombing and more safer passing through the Libsong Rd. May sense nga.
