Playing with Fire
Some senators are changing their tack
By Gonzalo Duque
SOMETHING good is going on in the Senate. They are now coming out of their ivory tower to help PGMA move the nation forward.
Instead of allowing themselves locked in investigative work, which is not their job in the first place, they have opened up to more realistic and positive issues in legislative work.
We are referring to their (many senators) active participation in the Legislative Executive Development Council (LEDAC), a novel feature lately in the national government’s working dynamics.
Lately, Senator Nene Pimentel and nine senators have come out openly for a federal form of government. This, to us, is an opening for more areas of cooperation and collaboration that would enable us to beat whatever ails the relationship of the executive and legislative departments.
We believe that this behavior of our senators is a step in the right direction, and let’s pray that they will keep it that way for the sake of political unity, and yes, sanity in our country .
By supporting openly the federal form of government, the senators are showing ample signs of pragmatism, resiliency, and an “un-common” common sense, a quality of mind that we need badly these days.
We may have lashed at some forms of changing the constitution such as the People’s Initiative and Congress dipping its not so clean hands in a sacrosanct document. But we have supported the democratic path thru a Constitutional Convention in determining the members of the Con Con delegates to draft a new document. Because, it is awfully true that there are obsolete provisions in our charter such as those that have to do with the economic life of the nation. The looming crisis needs a concerted action by our leaders, and a drafting of a new charter may just be an opportune move.
If our leaders such as our senators will keep it that way – giving the public interest their highest priority – then there is much hope in this country.
Let’s say that the unbecoming tantrums of Sen. Jamby Madrigal is a comic relief from the drudgery of life. It won’t be long when she will come up to her senses and follow the path of intelligent, sensible, brilliant and articulate participation in the senate.

By way of this column, allow us to greet Ms. Herminia Meneses, a Dagupeña based in San Francisco, the charming and generous wife of our friend Ernesto, on her birthday sometime next month.
The Meneses couple, aside from being our gracious hosts when we were in the US last month, have been a constant reader of this paper via the internet. Thousands more are very thankful to Ermin for devising this innovation in journalism. We thought we could “pay back” the warmth of hospitality and friendship they accorded us by expressing the gratitude of our city and province through this column. We also want to thank Ms. Mita Sta. Maria and all the members of the gang in SF for making our stay in their place enjoyable and memorable.
On Herminia’s birthday, she will donate a certain sum (dollars, kuanmo pa?) to keep the ball rolling for scholarship to the poor and needy of Dagupan. She will do it through the Mary Help of Christians.
You see, we don’t tire playing up this kind of report. The fact that the help is not even solicited makes the giver an authentic one. It’s up to the One Up There who will give the reward to the good Samaritans like our friends in SF USA. Mabuhay kayo!
