Here and There
Happy Easter to all!
By Gerry Garcia
A TWO-fold announcement of outstanding events was released by media by mid-March regarding national sports and a major road infrastructure here. One has to do with the inspiring and highly hoped for triumph of boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao in Las Vegas Nevada over Mexico’s Juan Manuel “Denamita” Marquez while the other, about the alleged opening of the multi-M new Dawel – Pantal-Lucao road on March 15, was something which turned out into sheer koryente, courtesy of local tabloid NJ which printed the news on its front page. The actual scheduled inauguration by Mayor Al F him-self of the new road, including the bride, was in April, the following month.

On Palm Sunday March 16, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao emerged victorious in his 3rd rather controversial bout with the Mexican which was cause for the country to jump in joy and exultation.
At least there was one Pangasinense (sports columnist of Punch) who, despite being a self-admitted admirer of the Pacman, positively banked on Marquez’s winning the bout. But Jess Garcia, erstwhile national cycling champ, was quick to point out that being half-Mexican himself and a personal friend of Marquez, he said he did have an easy choice knowing that Manny is basically a kababayan who could win and not let his country down.
And further he knew that his being apparently the villain for expressing favor for a Mexican foe could draw hurting criticism and cat-calls from his friends.

Semana Santa or Holy Week is the one and only time of the year that we members of the faith can get together to commemorate the passions and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross and we would not dare waste the precious hours by only gallivanting and picnicking on the beach without going to the church to pray and closely examine our conscience.
This in fact was what Pareng Oca, a fellow-Pangasinense and former Governor of the province was taking pains to advise us in the boob tube last Palm Sunday.
We wish everyone a Happy Easter.
