Political storm

By Jun Velasco

EARLIER, we wrote the head of this column, “Lozada, hero or heel.” We changed our mind.

After listening to Rodolfo “Jun” Lozada in the Senate hearing last Friday, we have developed an impression of the guy.  His words came   from the bottom of his heart.  No wonder, he wept at one point in his testimony.

Overacting? Making a palabas.

We have done some research about the guy. He loves the company of   great authors, yes, great men like Rizal. We thought in the inner recesses of his mind, he was courting the fire in Rizal’s story of the moth and the fire.

No one probably would wish to be in Lozada’s shoes now.

Since the NBN-ZTE deal took a grip of his life, his world has changed completely. This NBN-ZTE, a real nightmare.

We wish the Senate would wind up its hearing of Jun soon and allow him to stay with his family. It’s simply too much for someone whose fault was to do the government a good turn by placing it,   out of reach of corrupt vultures. Jun Lozada wanted to give the country a break, a chance to prosper.

We can only pray for his family who had thought his employment in the government with a nice post would be insurance for a bright future.

The Lozada – NBN-ZTE stormy weather preceded a crashing fall of the longest serving House Speaker, the longest serving Speaker Joe de Venecia.  But he is no longer speaker now. The breaching of his speakership was a classic story of backstabbing and treachery.

Pangasinenses will not forget that story for a long, long time.

Politics is a dirty game. That, everybody knows. The JdV treachery story has no equal in the Speaker’s life.

Is Jose de Venecia finished?

We don’t think so. Life may be hard, but   fair. The speaker did not deserve a cruel ending. No poetic justice.  He was a great statesman.

Columnist Alex Tulao is right. Among Pangasinan newsmen, only 20 per cent know how to use the computer.

And many professionals, businessmen and government workers are still using the antiquated typewriter. We thought this group to be living in the age of the carabao and plow.  They should shed their old clothing and step into the light.  The City Government of Dagupan and Medialink want to end the carabao and plow method of delivering basic services   by holding a powerful convention of Information

Communication Technology users on February 26.

Broadband technology guru Joey de Venecia will speak on the social impact of that technology. Our friend since pre-martial law years, Jones Campos, neighbor Wilson Chua of Bitstop Fame  who is a global leader in ICT, Monchito Ibrahim, ICT commissioner;  Ched Commissioner Evelyn Pascua and other ICT experts will come to Dagupan to demonstrate how easy and simple it is to master the art of computers  and thrive in business.

Democracy as a political ideal is a time-tested check to the rule by a few, when it would be expedient to abuse the rights of anyone.

Framers of constitutions based on democratic principles give the highest premium to the majority rule which Abraham Lincoln defined as a “government of the people, by the people and for the people.”

In this sense, we commend the regional Housing Land Use Regulatory Board based in San Fernando, La Union for ensuring that the democratic ideal was observed in the general assembly of homeowners in a Bonuan Gueset subdivision. The assembly which was also supervised by Barangay Chairman Angel Gumarang who in his speech made a strong appeal for unity and  neighborliness, and University of Pangasinan Dean Dr.  Ofelia Rayos.

We should also thank Dr. Reynaldo Bulosan, owner and   president of the St. Michael College, for keeping the homeowners association officers on their toes all the time.

By way of thanksgiving, the winning group headed by Ms.  Digna   Buhain will throw out a Valentines Party before or after Feb. l4.  Make love, not war. Happy Valentines!
