JdV’s impending ouster

By Jun Velasco

MOST Pangasineses are worried about the perceived impending ouster of   Speaker Joe de Venecia allegedly due to Malacañang’s machinations.

We don’t think it would be easy to   pin down a master of the game.  If we know the myriad factors that built the partnership between him and President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the anticipated split simply looks unthinkable.

But it can happen. It is already happening given, as we now see, the flawed foundation upon which the partnership was built.

There are no friends in politics, they say. And so we say, Joe de V is not Gloria’s friend, and vice versa.  What are we?  Have we forgotten that even families fight to the bitter end in the name of politics?

The Arroyos and De Venecias are breaking up because of the expose made by Joey de Venecia III that the First Family was involved in high-level corruption.

If  JdV gets ousted for  his son’s “fault”  — which was meant to save the country of $200 million – from unscrupulous hands, won’t that be  a  shining  moment for the  two, Joe and Joey?

It’s sad that a man who has constantly and brilliantly saved GMA from a sure fall from the Palace due to many impeachment coups would   be shoved by her family and partymates just like that.

What’s happening at the top reminds us of Julius Caesar being stabbed by his senator allies led by Brutus.

A similar episode was   reenacted by Aguinaldo on Bonifacio.

We think JdV’s thrust into the vortex of a political cataclysm should be his shiningest moment. A classic quirk in human history. Just  like  the rare one when  Justice Secretary Jose Abad Santos in World War II   tearfully saying  goodbye to his  son after the Japanese imperial army  asked  him to choose  between a life  with the Japs or death with the  Filipinos.

That  brief  meeting between  Supreme Court Justice Reynato Puno and media colleagues  in  Dagupan City  recently  might  portend  a  possibility in light of  the hurt  Arroyo- De Venecia  honeymoon. A political twist might be a-borning with Puno on top of the situation.

A  JDV-GMA fallout indeed has far ranging consequences. Anything can happen now.

We have been receiving unsettling reports about family members, kin, colleagues and friends dying or getting laid down by a severe illness.

Yesterday, the Department of Health sent us a brief about cancer being now the third killer disease in the country — along with cardiovascular diseases and TB.

Why should   we be health conscious?  Because life is precious.  Watch those hundreds of people queuing up to a Catholic priest, Fr. Fernando Suarez, to save their lives from the Grim Reaper or disease.

But Secretary Pingkoy Duque cautions that while faith can heal the sick, we should not ignore modern medicine which has been perfected by scientific work. Roger Canto, an old  friend, brother of  Councilor Jess Canto  and half brother of  former Gov. Vic Millora, gave us a book, “Extraordinary HEALING”  with a built-in blurb, “Trigger a Complete Health Turnaround in l0 Days or Less,” authored by Arthur H. Brownstein, M.D.

The book , inspired by several gurus in medicine and healthcare, says: “Your body  can  heal  itself.  It can do so because it has a healing system. If you are in good health, you will want to know about this system because it is what keeps you in good health and because you can enhance this condition. If you or people you love are sick, you will want to know about this system because it is the best hope for recovery,” says Dr. Andrew Weil.

We commend City Agriculturist Emma Molina for thwarting the entry of a van containing P7 million worth of spoiled fish into the Dagupan market.

In our book, Emma is a Dagupan city government   worker who does her job well and sincerely. Because of her, poisoned fish did not find their way into our dining table. She is one of the best department heads in Mayor Al’s work force.
