Sayang!

By Gonzalo Duque

RECENT events, political ones principally, caught everyone, especially, us Pangasinenses by surprise.

Our two highest national officials, PGMA and SJDV, were shown to be at loggerheads.

One of them, SJDV, was toppled from his powerful post, the Speakership.

We are saddened by this development. The incident gives truism to the old cliché, “you can’t fight City Hall.”

City Hall here is Malacañang. Sana Kuya Joe, who is known all over as a quintessentially astute politician, should have realized that.

We are truly saddened by his fall from grace.

What has brought this about? Was it JDV’s junior and namesake, Joey de Venecia III, for hitting the First Gentleman?

Well, these are varied angles, shades and hues to the issue.

Ours is a mere detached view of the situation.  You see when giants fight, it is best to take cover.

From the very beginning, we have viewed the two personalities with admiration. It’s not easy to rise to the pinnacle of success in Philippine politics, you know.

We can only commiserate with their break-up.

These two political giants have their fortunes, good and bad lucks.  When any of them falls, the earth trembles.

We hope the incident will give some politicians valuable lessons. It just goes to show that there are events in our lives that we can’t control or manage.  It’s up to our wheel of fortune – or to God.

Let’s pray that Manong Joe would see the reason for his fall, politically and ditto with PGMA who must be grieving, too, kasi may pinagsamahan din sila.

It’s also our hope that Kuya Joe, though no longer Speaker, will devote his time to his unfinished projects in the district and the nation. He should be reminded that the much-praised Dawel, Pantal, Lucao alternate route will be completed soon.  May mga ninenerbiyos na baka iwanan na lang na nakatiwangwang.

We have discussed here, too, that our projects with PGMA in promoting quality education in the province and country will be realized.

We are happy to note that at Governor Spines’ SOPA (mas masarap ata kung sopas, ano?) nabanggit niya ang peace and order. Dapat lang being a former Police director ng Pangasinan and the Region.  Nandiyan pa yong unsolved killing of Mayor Jolly Resuello… the disappearance of Ani Lagao’s son, the capture of the drug-pushing husband and wife of Tondaligan Park….and so on.

And yet nakuha nila ang top provincial police office, top Dagupan City Police, etcetera… harinawa, mag-improve pa sana and peace and order dito sa ating panlalawigan.

Despite the national outstanding awards, there’s still room for improvement.  Carry On!

It’s Valentine’s Day on Thursday,

We’re sure the motels and hotels are fully packed on the day.  We wish to thank Ms. Marlene Ocampo for inviting us to her classy Diner’s Bistro at her own building at the corner of Bonifacio and Burgos Streets in Dagupan City.

She has a giant screen where you can hear and see your favorite singers the likes of Elvis Presley, Kenny Rogers, Cliff Richard and the Cascades belt out your favorite ditties.

Let’s go there – and enjoy too, her stakes. And dance to the tune of rock n’ roll, etc…

How will the JDV-GMA break-up affect our local power scenario?

In our view, it will affect it in one or more ways…the reason is that the purse from the Palace may now be distributed in a new manner.  Lalakas dito si Monching Guico, a presidential relative, and these solons who voted for “yes” in the ouster-move.

Kuya Joe, we were told, might go to the Opposition, and let’s hope he will be successful there without damaging the bargaining power of the province with Malacañang.
