Think about it
Joey de Venecia before local Rotarians
By Jun Velasco
MAKATI City was in the headlines again. Senator Antonio Trillanes and General Danilo Lim “invaded” the Manila Pen to launch their withdrawal of support to the Arroyo government in what many believe was meant to trigger ( God forbid!) a military takeover.
The event has stirred up nervous text messages that all is not well in the country and called on the people to join cause with Trillanes reminiscent of People Power Parts I and II that toppled Presidents Marcos and Erap.
It’s risky to make comparisons because administration advisers have fiercely studied past failed and/or successful coups and taken extra and cunning counter or preemptive measures. No doubt, the pardon of Erap has mollified the opposition in some way, and the smart dalliances of newly elected Nacionalista Party president Manny Villar with the administration have weakened the resistance.
Add Speaker Joe de Venecia’s restrained behaviour amidst phalanxes of artillery fire launched against him by you-know-who. Statesman Joe, as we all know, will be the last man to hurt a fly unless abuse gets over the hump.
What will tilt the balance in our opinion is if the military, which is following Washington’s signals, decides to support Trillanes and company, which may still be remote at this stage. Let’s pray that sober and rational voices will still be heard and heeded. Ours is still under a sacrosanct rule of law, and Filipinos by nature are patient and persevering.

The Rotary Club of Downtown Dagupan will be host club to all their counterparts in Pangasinan when they hear youthful businessman Joey de Venecia III, brilliant son of Speaker JdV, on December 11 at the Star Plaza.
He will speak on broadband technology and other economic issues which, as the organizers posted would guide the nation’s new formula for economic survival and success.
Joey had been briefing us on broadband technology long before the year 2000 until the controversial ZTE splashed the tricky word lately.
His date with Rotarians marks the club’s launching of a series of symposia involving outstanding leaders who will illumine them and the general public on the burning issues of the day.

Mayor Al Fernandez’s idyllic farm resort in Barangay Bacayao Norte is Dagupan’s latest tourism come-on. The place is gifted with a certain quiet and beauty that is painful to leave. Small wonder, our cumpare has dramatically regained his pinkish health because of the therapeutic air and the sheer joy of feeding hundreds of bangus fingerlings in the clean and clear pond.
By all accounts, the place has effectively become the extension of city hall complete with Al’s work-oriented staff.
