Playing with Fire
VM Belen and Lucy Honrado, ok kayo
By Gonzalo Duque
MOST of us in Pangasinan are uneasy and anxious at the political turbulence gripping Malacañang and the House of Representatives.
We share the mutual hurt that is slicing the hearts of two close allies, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Speaker Joe de Venecia. We can only hope and pray that the cause of their mutual hurts will be excised soon and crushed and revive their usual amity, not enmity, for the sake of the country.
And, if we may quote Macky Samson, “for their own mutual interest, too.” Macky, at the birthday of Brian Balingit recently, was quoting JdV when he warned that if he falls, Gloria also falls.
Prudence dictates that we leave this sensitive matter to their own respective judgments. They know what’s best.
These loose talks about Malacañang planning to oust JdV from the speakership are just that, loose talks. Because, as usual, for the nth time, Macky’s words might have a ring of truth. But judging from administration’s close allies, like brod Secretary Pincoy who was at Brian’s bash, Ate Glo’s political stars are still glowing, and that it would be foolish to predict her downfall at this point in time.
We tend to be uneasy using that phrase “at this point in time.” Grammarians might shoot us down for using it. They’d say, “at this point” or “at this time” would be more apt.
We repeat, if the two are listening, please kiss and make up. The country, the nation, our province-mates, the Filipino people, all of us who care for you and the country want you to bury the hatchet the sooner the better.

We just observed All Saints Day and All Souls Day. It’s not only today that we wrote in this column our faith in the role of our departed. Probably, our forefathers knew that like the saints that we consider our representatives to the Lord, our departed loved ones such as parents and kin and friends who “have gone ahead” still continue to act as our guides in the way we conduct our worldly affairs. That is why we always remember them, we turn to them when we seek solace and solution to some knotty problems.
We know that you – most of you, anyway – agree with this point, because somehow and in some specific instances in your lives, you have found this to be true.
We have stated here and in many personal chats with friends that we usually seek father’s inspiration in prayers when we feel “cornered,” so to speak, and thank God, we get fast and perfect solutions. Call it divine intervention or a pipeline to papa and mama, but it works.
This time, we urge the faithful, you dear readers, to do it regularly, but with an amendment, if you won’t mind. Pray for the uplift of others, especially the bereaved and unfortunate ones. Put charity over and above your petitions, and mind you, ok itong si Gonzalo ka nyo mamaya. Even the lucky recipient of your prayers and petitions to your departed loved ones will instantly have a good thought or feel for you. We call this method prayer for charity. Do it. It works.

We chose Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and Dr. Lucy Honrado as our column head, and we have a special reason for it.
Dr. Lucy Honrado is doing great things to the club that we chartered, the Rotary Club of Uptown Dagupan.
A very special feat she did for the club was her recruitment of another devastating lady, Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez. A lot of magnificent things have been happening to the club since then. We need not list them here because masyadong marami. Aside from a successful feeding program, the club has succeeded in contracting the famed songbird Sarah Geronimo to perform in Dagupan.
You see, it takes a pure heart to see the beauty of Lucy’s soul. Ditto with Belen, who discharged the mayor’s job with aplomb when Mayor Al Fernandez was in the US.
Regarding our friend Jess Garcia’s boil that the lady politician “is self destructing” for ignoring his cellphone calls on a recent cycling race she has known all along and was even meant to honor her, we agree with a friend’s observation that “baka miscols and missend lang yan.” Pareng Jess, continue to be good to the sweet lady ha?
In our book, the word “uptown” is providential. The club has no way to go but up, up and away.
Congrats to you, Belen and Lucy, and all the Uptowners!
