Playing with Fire
Power Grab
By Gonzalo Duque
AS soon as the sight of Manila came to view after a 16-hour flight, our first desire was to contact Sec. Pingkoy and Speaker Joe de Venecia. Why?
We were intrigued by a PDI news item that our friend Joe de V was asking for the removal of Pingkoy from PGMA’s cabinet.
Whattt???!!! It’s shocking, but we later found out, no one including those outside the family could find any rhyme or reason for that fictitious JDV move. Grabe ang pulitika talaga ano? But before we could even make a phone call to either one – kuya Joe or Pingkoy – we were told by a number of friends, reliable ones, who all denounced the news item as pure intrigue and a complete falsehood. And we got assurances from JDV’s closest advisers and staff that the two (Pingkoy and JDV) had already talked, with JDV bristling with anger at the fictitious report, and assuring Pingkoy that he could not even imagine doing such a stupid thing!
As to Pingkoy, we left it to the fact that he is doing well in his job so for anyone to badmouth him will get rebuked for having a sick conscience.
Maong sirin, we said, because aside from his superlative record as a cabinet official, Pingkoy – just like us and our other brothers, really worked hard for JDV’s congressional bid.

If you look hard and analyze the Philippine political spectrum, you will not fail to discern that President GMA’s allies are aching to have a bite of her fair and dainty political skin. If you ask us, these ungentlemanly foxes will fail. You might say “there goes that pro-GMA Gonzalo again!” But mark our word. And let this be a fair warning to GMA’s enemies: It’s too premature for these power-thirsty politicians to think that the President is beginning to be a has-been. That news story about Big Brod Dr. Ado telling all and sundry that PGMA is enroute to a great and successful term is true and factual.
The political swings and brickbets will go on for our entertainment fare, but in our book, no one in the country’s political arena has arrived to beat PGMA yet.
Mantomba ran singa abuek ira tay onlalaban ed si Atchi Glo!
But in the long and broad view of it, we want PGMA to “cleanse” her stable of Machiavellian and unscrupulous advisers. She has one adviser who during then President Erap’s days in which he, too, was adviser, the actor-politician fell from power. He too almost dented former President Ramos’ shining armor, but, he soon sacked himself out because he was found out working for FVR’s harm.
In the light of the political tempest that threatens to divide the nation, we urge PGMA to review the past track record of her political advisers and not to hesitate in booting out the wolves hiding in sheep’s clothing.

NOTES: We were still in San Francisco when Mayor Al Fernandez and party arrived in the area. Just curious: Why did they go to the U.S. at this time? Because their barangay wards will ask for their campaign funds? Just joking… Our advocacy for an enlightened public is validated by the confusion that has engulfed the nation. Wala sanang confusion if the public is not gullible and ignorant. So, we say with confidence: education before politics, so that the truth will prevail.
