Opposition senators self-destructing too soon?

By Gonzalo Duque

WE in the education sector paid a courtesy call on Speaker Joe de Venecia at his beautiful residence at Forbes recently.

All of us from Cocopea and Pacu were impressed by the warm and touching hospitality of the speaker and his lovely wife, Gina, and the warm chat that followed.

My colleagues at Cocopea were disarmed by the Speaker especially when he told us to deal on specifics so that action will follow immediately.

Manong Joe said there’s no point of talking in generalities if we mean business, and so, the table was turned to us.

The group decided to see him again soon with documented, specific and substantive proposals.

As you and I know, one of the crucial issues facing our country is the allegation that our graduates lack solid foundation. Many can’t express themselves understandably. Many cannot do a simple Math problem. And still   many can’t grasp or comprehend simple problems.

I have posited the view that our young lack the foundation because of our short-term basic education course, which is 6-year grade school, and 4-year secondary curriculum.

In most developed countries basic education is achieved in l2 years. Some parents will cry, but I say to them, they will have the last laugh later because the sound education of their children will carry them through in the tough battle of their lives later.

Better to experience the tough preparation now than tumble down later.

Well, this is just a thought that the educators are expected to take up with the Speaker in our next meeting soon. By that time, I expect him to have been elected speaker for the 5th time. He has all the aces, and the grapevine has been saying all along that he will win the vote hands down.

Did you notice that the opposition are vividly back to their me-first politics? I am referring to the senators who are mostly eyeing the 20l0 presidential race to have a shot at political power.

Tama sila. Genuine opposition, wala ng inatupag kundi mangoppose nang mang-oppose!

Why so? This early, most of them are positioning for a grand plot at the presidency. That  is  why even amongthemselves, they are already cutting each other’s throats.

Believe me, di sila nagkaka eye to eye ang mga yan. Whenever they greet each other, hi cumpadre, their eyes say mamatay ka na sana.

Mark my word, the day will soon come magkakawatakwatak ang mga yan. The quest for power in number one in their agenda. Wanna bet?

Unlike those in the admi, iisa ang boss nila, ang pinakacute at pinakamatinik  na presidente — si Ate Glow.

Maliit nga, but she is respected, loved and admired, and to the  kaliwetes, feared.

Ano mayrun si Ate Glo na sinasaluduhan ng kanyang mga   matitinik na kaalyado? FVR, JDV, Ed Ermita, Miriam, at iba pa, love nila si bosing, our dainty, cute presidenta.

I’ll tell you this. Pati ako na halos kababata  niya, eh, di ko maintindihan kung bakit nagkakanirbyos ako ng kaunti  kung kaharap ko. Call  it  re-verence, awe, love, respect, but all my friends confess they too feel the same.

My theory is that, Ate Glo is a great leader. She is she who hires and fires.   Yan  ang lider na nag-unite sa mga totooong  lideres ng ating bansa. Di   tulad ng  kabila  na watak-watak.
