Practical Considerations

By Gonzalo Duque

JUST one more week – or six days, to be exact – is Judgement Day. While I wrote this, I saw an appeal issued by the group of Justice Emilio Gancayco and Dr. James Dy urging our voters to go out and vote.

Yes, even if you don’t trust the Comelec, they said, just vote. The group also asked the public not to hesitate to expose any violations, if any. In the end, the good will prevail. Because if we don’t have   much faith, then we have to say kaput and pack up and live in the mountains.

I don’t think we have reached that point of no return yet. The enemies and detractors of government are simply too noisy. You’d think, everything is going to the dogs as they picture our country to be, but what do you think, ladies and gentlemen?  Not true, di ho ba? We still can walk the streets safe and exchange banter in the middle of the night. We still ride the tricycle that ferries us to our destination without fearing for our lives.

Kaya lang ho, itong mga detractors ni Ate Glo, they love to smudge as unsafe our beloved   country. As if there’s no more hope. Ganyan ang political opposition ngayon. Di tulad nong panahon nina erpat at ni Mama Libring. The electoral contest was fought fairly.   Whoever won got a congratulatory hug from the loser after the counting.

So, I say, count your blessings. Don’t put words into our democracy that it doesn’t deserve. Ok pa tayo. Thumbs up sirin!

Don’t get me wrong, please. Some of my friends are spreading stories that I am the spokesman of JdV. No sir, it just happens that my views on the congressional race in the Fourth District are in favor of the Speaker.

Both of them are my friends. But even so, I have to state my stand. Because it is patently true that in this congressional race, Joe has the aces.

If he wins, and I think, he will, he has another big chance to clinch the speakership, yes, again. The Philippine speaker will go again to Dagupan. Those who continue to badmouth him admit deep in their hearts that Manong Joe is the best that happened to our city. He towers over and above all the congressmen and lawmakers in the country and abroad. He is promising, he is Mr. Speaker Next Week?

Ganyan naman ang politics e, hindi naman Dios yan. Si BSL din, kasangga ko yan sa Jaycees, I admire him for his leadership traits, but he too makes a lot of promises. What happened to the Awai waste management deal? Yong Malimgas?

Sometimes people expect too much. Tell me any politician who does not make any promises. Probably me, that’s why dami ko rin kalaban. Because I tell them the truth to their faces. Walang plastikan. What you hear, what you see is it. Walang tago tago. Di ba, Councilor Chito? Utol? Did I ever lie?  But I’ am only telling you the truth, facts, walang artihan. Many ladies admire me for that ha? That’s why I am sometimes irresistible. Ahem.

Watch your tongue, Benjie! You always say that the reason you were not able to come up with a law when you were our congressman and brought home any infra project of note is that the President at the time was Erap, not your partymate.

Kawawang bata, pare ko. Paano ito  ngayon? And Pangulo natin ay yong pinagreresign mo? So if you win, assuming you will, wala na naman accomplishment?

For your and the public’s information, all the opposition leaders nationally are resigned to the fact that PGMA can’t still be toppled. Wala naman silang inaatupag kundi pagbaba ni Ate Glo!). The opposition can’t yet produce enough congressmen to impeach our beloved Pangasinense-Pampango president!

Medyo wrong reasoning ata, pare ko!

Why am I taking an unusually strong position on the JDV-BSL affair? Kasi ompiano  manproproduce tayo lalamuet na congressman who is an enemy of the President.

We need a congressman who can deliver, who will be successful, and who will help the President implement her l0-point agenda. Benjie, a fine leader, should have stayed on as the city’s best executive ever. Well, it’s already late in the day to say that.

Good luck to all of them, candidates. And to us who will inherit a government run by those we are going to elect on May l4.
