PhilRice video story wins international award

By Sosimo Ma. Pablico

The video story of PhilRice (Philippine Rice Research Institute) was recently adjudged honorable mention winner at the 13th Annual Communicator Awards competition (video category), which was held in Hollywood, California, United States.

The video story, “PhilRice: Our Best for Our Rice Farmers,” was singled out from among 1,698 video entries that came from all over the world.  It was also a finalist in the Vedere la Scienza (window on science) Festival in Milan, Italy last March.

The 13th Annual Communicator Awards is a leading international awards program based in the United States.  It recognizes creative excellence in the communication field throughout the world and holds separate annual competitions for audio, video and print media.

The entries are judged by professionals whose talents surpass a high standard of distinction and excellence and whose works serve as a benchmark for the industry.

On the other hand, the Vedere la Scienza Festival has been presenting the best scientific documentary productions of recent years from across the world, together with archive material of different genres (fiction, industrial documentaries, science fiction, and animation).

The Vedere la Scienza is known as the first international scientific television, film, and audio visual media festival. An international jury made up of representatives from the scientific, science communication and media communities will assess the works presentedin the festival.

The premiere showing of the PhilRice story in the Vedere la Scienza Festival at the Spazio Oberdan, viale Vittorio Veneto 2 in Milan is scheduled on March 29.

PhilRice executive director Dr. Leocadio S. Sebastian said the award in effect is a recognition from the international community of the untiring efforts of everybody involved in the production of the country’s staple food, most especially the researchers and farmers.

PhilRice: Our Best for Our Rice Farmers was produced for PhilRice by MAD COMM Co. Ltd (Making a Difference through Communication) in collaboration with the PhilRice Development Communication Division.  The award is the first international award for PhilRice, but the Institute has already received a number of prestigious national awards in journalism.  Among them is the Binhi Awards Hall of Fame from Philippine Agricultural Journalists for winning the Binhi Award agricultural newsletter of the year in 2004, 2005, and 2006-2007.

The video story touches on the heart of every viewer, as it features the country’s deepest   thoughts on rice and how PhilRice developed from a vision that turned into reality.

In the last part of the video, a song aptly states eating pagyamanin ang bukid ng pag-asa!”  (let us make our farms more progressive), depicting how PhilRice values the Filipino rice farmers by helping them produce more rice through research and development to improve their quality of life.

At the bottom line, the PhilRice story speaks well of what motivates PhilRice researchers to continue their quest for new knowledge and technologies as it declares at the end “A ready rice for the Filipino people; and for farmers, more income for health and education. – these are our challenges.”
