Playing with Fire
Nominal Christians, watch out!
By Gonzalo Duque
ALL Christendom pauses this week for a spiritual retreat.
I wonder why we are advised to do it only once a week and annually. It should be a daily, every second of our lives activity.
But alas, we are mostly nominal Christians, And so we don’t have the gusto to do it.
Let’s face it. We are all sinners. And yet, we do not even do something about our sinning tendencies.
When you wish somebody ill, you are automatically violating God’s law, for He wants us to love one another including our enemies. Impossible, you say. No, it’s possible, it’s in fact a must, that is if we are really real and true Christians.
It’s very common among politicians to wish one another ill, that the opponent was dead, patay na sana para walang problema.
That is the kind of prayer that boomerangs. I may not be a good Christian, but I never wish anyone, including my pet peeve, ill. Baka ako pa malintikan. Magagalit sila.
I pose this challenge to our politician-friends. Are you a practicing Christian?
Do you wish your opponent well? Dapat ganoon e. It’s like breaking up with a friend. It’s the hardest thing to do. Kita nyo? Di kayo pala tunay na Kristiyano.
It’s very difficult to pass the test Lalo na kung pulitiko ka, naku, ewan ko kung masasabi ni Benjie na “sana palabuyan ng Diyos si Joe de V.”
So, we have to do some serious re-assessment of our lives. Let’s ask the Lord to bless and cleanse us. In the long run, sa kanya run tayo pupunta, mabuti pang this early alam na natin na tayo ay papunta sa Gloria. No one knows his or her end. It’s always best to yield to the Almighty Power.
In His great name, I pray for all my friends and also enemies (maybe there are many that I do not know) to be blessed by the Lord.
He keeps watch over us. That thought alone should make us eternally grateful and faithful.
HAPPY EASTER!

Come April l0, the Lyceum Northwestern U will have its graduation ceremonies at the People’s Astrodome. Speaker Joe de V is guest of honor and speaker.
I saw an insider in Lakas yesterday.
He told me that the speaker despite his load of work as Lakas national president is conducting the congressional campaign like he were running for president. Computerized, scientific campaign strategies, and tapping the best minds and advisers. If that is true, lagot ka Benjie, pinantrabajom ya agaylay laingen si Manong Joe.
When someone asked him why he is like fighting Erap again, he reportedly said, and I quote, “I want to be a young fighting politician again, it’s good for the health. We will make history. Together with Al Fernandez, who is still loved by the people, we shall create a new Dagupan, a new district. God help us, for the sake of our beloved Dagupeños.” Those were not my words but by a friend’s.
Sabi ng Punch, “watch out for Joe in the hustings,” he is still the best when in a fighting mood.”
How about my friend Benjie? Let’s hope he is up to par. But please remove the venom and the hate from your heart. Lent pa naman ngayon. Between Joe and Benjie, I love Benjie, because he needs my care more than Manong Joe… That’s why I want him to be like before, mabait, smiling, a young leader, Mr. Jaycee, but please without the bitterness and hate.
As Muhammad Ali would say, “sting like a bee, float like a butter fly.” How can he float if he is angry?

Some charming lass thought I was being spiritual in my last column. I said I was simply speaking from my depths. When you speak the truth, you find new life, new hope, new everything. In fact, I feel so good now that I am out of politics. Makapatey tay pulitika. Thank God I am out.
In the final analysis. Wala namang ibibigay na kabutihan yang puliitika na yan. Panay problema, maraming kalaban. Many unseen enemies. I want to sleep well, you know. When we get old we look for rest and peace, more friends, beauty, God and all goodness.
God bless all of us in our much-needed moment of spiritual retreat.
