Returning to my Alma Mater
By Eva C. Visperas
Long time no see. That’s really what it was when I recently returned to St. Louis University in Baguio City.
March 1988, I bade goodbye to this university where I obtained my Mass Communications degree. I didn’t know then when I would return.
Last April 21, I was glad to be back. This time, for the graduation of my daughter who earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.
“Akulaw ka la amiga (You’re already old friend),” someone commented.
Ouch, I protested and retorted, “Andi, asakbay ak labat ya aloko na laki (No, it’s just that I was fooled early by a man)”, coupled with my crisp laughter.
What do parents feel during the college graduation day of their child?
Teary-eyed, I could not exactly tell how it was. More than fulfilled, more than successful, more than overjoyed.
“Congratulations. Graduate lay Apple without untoward incidents,” reads a text message from a fellow reporter. Untoward incidents mean teen age pregnancy/marriage, long years in college due to back subjects, and expulsion, among others.
Looking back, every time I was asked how much I spent for her schooling, I’d always reply with, “I don’t know. I’m not counting. It gives me headaches if I do.”
Of course, it was never easy raising and educating children all by my lonesome.
But, I was not really alone. There is someone up there guiding us, using generous people with beautiful hearts to help us through as His instruments.
Thanks for the trials. Thanks for the faith.
