Playing with Fire
Festive mood
By Gonzalo Duque
THAT’S right.
Despite the rainy season, which is often gloomy, my aura at the moment is festive, “celebrative,” ecstatic, if you will.
There’s a reason for this, for being joyous. You know it already I suppose? Our Lyceum Northwestern University feels it’s on top of the world. Why? Because it bagged three of the top ten slots in the national board for nursing recently released. We landed No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9, namely, Razzle Abalos, Benedict Mayo and Melody Aquino.
I could kiss you, guy and gals, you really made my day!
But in fairness, I doff my hat too to my older brother, Cesar, chairman of the University of Pangasinan. UPANG landed on the topmost slot. Numero Uno with super examinee, Gringo (not Honasan) de Guzman- San Diego. UPANG also landed Number 8 with examinee, Felipe Sotelo.
Getting into the Top Ten Board Placers list is being becoming a habit for LNU and UPANG. Last year, LNU had Ms. Michelle Aglubat, and UPANG, too, had Jan John Mate de Guzman, also number 7.
Why am I felicitating a rival school? Because it can’t be helped. Besides, brother ko ata ang topman dyan, si Kuya Cesar. Give credit where it is due, sabi da..
Maybe, my shouting matches with CHED officials last time gave our students the inspiration to do their best. They must have told themselves, “We must excel because our leader is fighting for us.” You all saw me on the battle lines, crushing the forces out to erode our tradition of excellence. Well, the UPANG people knowing that Cesar is my brother, did not want to be left behind, and by Jove, they overtook us … well, just by a few points. They landed Number l! I congratulate them especially my big brother, Cesar, known hereabouts as “the tycoon,” for his Midas touch and high achievements.
I salute the faculty, too, who sharpened their spurs, oiled their firepower and worked their students to the fullest, yes, from both schools, including my UPANG counterpart, President Li Rivera.
Now it can be told. Why do you have to send your children to the Manila schools when right here we have the best schools? That elitist mentality should be buried six feet below the ground, right Dean Jean Mendoza?
All I can say is, thank the Lord, and thank you all for keeping faith with us.

Newly reopened DZRH Dagupan, otherwise known as Aksyon Radyo under its manager, former student activist and fiery journalist Ging Cardinoza, is now in the webcast. It can now reach any audience from any point of the world. Bet that? If Sunday Punch has its on-line, Aksyon Radyo has its webcast, thanks to Wilson Chua of Bitstop who is largely responsible for DWCM’s unprecedented jump in the webcast.
If you want to go worldwide, switch ww.eradioportal.com, now enabling all other Filipino radio stations including Aksyon Radyo ll6l Pangasinan to be in webcast.
Ging excitedly tells me the local station made it to the worldwide web just only one week after it resumed broadcast last June 20, making full use of the high-end computer set donated by the beauteous Rachel Arenas pagani ganin congresswoman in the 3rd district of Pangasinan. Hep, no political ad, but what can we do, Rachel is everywhere where the action is! Maganda na, ma PR pa! Anong sinasabi mo, Orly Navarro, mapera? Matetew kan lake.
Back to Aksyon Radyo. With its new webcast, Aksyon Radyo is way ahead of the pack and is able to serve effectively as a bridge between overseas Pangasinenses and their loved ones in the province.
I advise those who want to be involved in this high-tech experience to direct their browser to wweradioportal.com and click DWCM.
Wilson Chua, the undisputed father of the internet hereabouts, has programmed Aksyon Radyo for a 24-hour webcast so that even after sign off at ll p.m., programs aired earlier could be replayed.
It may interest you to know that Ging has invited me to compile all my columns so that we could share our viewpoints to everyone across the seas. I am grateful for this privilege and honor, eh, Ging, I hope my other colleagues who are just as good as I am (ahem…ahem…) would also be into this exciting ball game.
Congrats to Aksyon Radyo DWCM/DZRH.
We are going places ha, literally.
