Earthquake of 1990

By JOHN BOLINAS

Fellow Dagupenos,

Where were you on July 16, 1990? That was the day when a huge earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 shook and rattled Dagupan City, Baguio City and nearby places. For those who were not there and did not witness the scary earthquake, I have captured many scenes with my trusted and old camera which I would like to share with you.

I am a living witness to that event and saw what happened on that day. The pictures that I took a day after the earthquake and weeks thereafter are testaments to the intensity and destructive force of the tremor.

I saw underground water shooting up above like a fountain, may be 4 meters high, ground opening up, electric post falling down, people running in panic, hundreds of slippers, shoes and personal belongings strewn indiscriminately to the ground, people kneeling in prayer summoning for Divine help, the chaos and fear etched in the faces of the multitude of people scampering for safety.

Per my recollection, there was one death caused by stampede inside the movie theatre. No reports of stealing despite many of the business establishments were temporarily abandoned by the owners.
