Prices of fish up due to Lenten season

WITH the onset of the Lenten season, prices of fish in Dagupan City began going up.

Galunggong has been pegged at P220 per kilo, while the Dagupan bangus now fetches P180 to P220 per kilo.

City Agriculturist Emma Molina, in an interview, said fish prices have risen due to traditional increase in demand brought about by the Lenten Season that obliges Catholics to refrain from eating meat on Fridays.

The African Swine Fever (ASF) that continues to be a concern in Pangasinan also impacted on the price of fish.

Molina said the ongoing ASF threat also induces residents to eat fish than pork, even if slightly cheaper than beef.

Another factor that influenced higher prices of fish is the felt shortage of bangus supply owing principally cold climate being experienced today.

“The fish do not grow well, as they do not eat much during cold weather”, said Molina.

She assured the public that regular supply of bangus will return with the onset of summer.

“This is normal. We experience this yearly. Just in time for the Bangus Festival”, she added. (Ahikam Pasion)
