FOR PROTECTION VS. CALAMITIES

LINGAYEN—Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas is urging his flock to pray the Oratio Imperata against calamities from June 3 to Nov. 1.

In a circular dated May 28 addressed to priests, Villegas said the Oratio Imperata (obligatory prayer) must be prayed in all parishes, chaplaincies, pastoral stations and schools in every Mass before the post-communion prayer.

“Through the past years, our province has been spared from natural calamities thus helping our Catholic faithful to maximize the fruits of agriculture and aquaculture,” he said.

He added, “Our parishioners gratefully attribute this blessing to our Oratio Imperata”.

In the prayer, the faithful seek God’s divine protection as the people face their fears and confront the threats that cause them anxiety.

These include deliverance from strong typhoons, relentless rains, destructive earthquakes, drought and pests, deadly floods and storm surges, red tides and fish kills, deadly lightning, violence and wars.

Also included are corruption and sin, criminality and terrorism, and selfishness and indifference.

At the end of the prayer the following will be recited by the leader: “Divine Jesus, you calmed the storms and walked over the waters. Give us fine weather. Shield us from distress. Drive away from our land all calamities and disasters of nature. We entrust ourselves you now and forever.”

The prayer will be concluded asking the Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag to pray for the people. (Eva Visperas)
