SAN CARLOS CITY— A City Cooperative Development Council (CCDC) will soon be organized by the local government here to promote and enhance cooperatives.

Mayor Julier Resuello is pushing for the formation of the CCDC even as he ordered the City Cooperative Office (CCO) headed by Arlaine de Vera to harness existing cooperatives and organize new ones for more livelihood projects.

“I, together with members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, am giving full moral and financial support to the cooperative movement in the city,” Resuello said.

Cooperatives, the mayor said, must be developed into stable business enterprises that are profitable for members, especially during these financially challenging times.

The proposed CCDC, he said, will monitor and support the cooperatives, help coordinate with government and non-government agencies, and give incentives and awards to model cooperatives.

The proposed CCDC will be composed of representatives of the mayor, the CDO, treasurer, budget officer, accountant, Sangguniang Panlungsod Coop committee chairman, all primary cooperatives in the city, Department of Local Government and Community Development, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Agrarian Reform.

A representative of the Land Bank of the Philippines will also be included as ex- officio member.

De Vera said the city envisions the construction of a trade center where all products of the city’s cooperatives, particularly agricultural products, handicraft and furniture can be displayed and sold.

Existing cooperatives in this city, include mango producers, produce fruit juices, particularly mango that are contained in bottles and tetra packs, dried mango in neat packs, and mango syrup.

Other coops are into fish processing, making such products as buro, boneless tilapia and bangus, bagoong and agamang. —LM
