THE Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) recently received two awards from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for agriculture-related programs aimed at improving the quality and increasing farm production.

The program “Transforming the Lives of Farm Households Through Sustainable Technology-based Development: The MMSU Seed Stock Dispersal Program” was named the country’s outstanding higher education institution (HEI) extension program.

Another award was given for the “Integrated Research, Development, and Commercialization Program for MMSU Gold Carabao Mango and Other Commercially Important Fruit Crops” as the best HEI research in the Ilocos Region.

Dr. Miriam Pascua, MMSU president, said the seed stock dispersal program, one of MMSU’s flagship extension programs, is designed to improve farmers’ agricultural productivity and income through sustained supply and use of improved seed stocks as planting materials.

Meanwhile, the fruits research program already identified and conserved fruit selections as well as registered six new fruit varieties with the National Seed Industry Council and commercialized them. Quality planting materials of these varieties are now available for field planting.

MMSU received a total of P1.6 million cash prize for the projects. – SMP
