MALASIQUI—Third District Rep. Rose Marie “Baby” Arenas filed a House resolution to make World Teachers’ Day, every October 5, as a non-working day for teachers.

“Teachers cannot celebrate World Teachers’ Day in the same way as working people celebrate Labor Day on May 1 because October 5 is a working day,” Arenas said.

Arenas pointed out that the typical day of basic education teachers in particular, in the public sector is characterized by waking up early after late night preparations, commuting, trekking and long hours of walk in the case of teachers in far-flung areas, teaching oftentimes big number of students in crowded classroom and usually challenging teaching environment, doing daily lesson log, detailed lesson planning, and rigid-document centered new performance system not to mention class observations and other administrative work.

“In order to clearly demonstrate our care and a deep sense of collective gratitude to our teachers with whom none of us will be where we are now, they should be allowed even for a day to celebrate the World Teachers’ Day in the manner they see fit,” Arenas said. (PhilStar Wire Service)
